  1. Cheers, Peter, never having seen the plans for the Tiger Moth, what you are saying makes absolute sense.
  2. Hi Geof I read your post with interest as I have built the cirrus moth 40, again DB with an SC52,  measured from the plans the down thrust is 4.3 deg and the side thrust is 3 deg.  Weird I would have thought that they would both have been the same as they are so similar. Anyway the cirrus flies wonderfully with the above thrust lines. 3. Jon Trust me after all the swearing, the cam is back correctly. lol.
  4. Thanks all, I did strip down the engine last night, and I did look at the OS52FS on you tube, ( thanks Engine Doctor). I was relieved at the ease. (I am a retired physicist not a mechanic) What I found was the bearings even the reduction gear ones on the cam were perfect, everything piston/ liner etc. There was a build up of carbon on the exhaust valve surface and stem and also the exhaust port to the silencer. So Jon and Peter were right . Iv'e cleaned it up best as I could , I am the sort who looses minute things so I didn't actually remove the valve. I have built it back up and sucessfully run it this dinner time. The only awkward bit was adjusting the "bleep bleep" valve /tappet clearances. So all the black is/was carbon from the exhaust being carried by the excess oil. I might run it without tank pressure when the weather is better. If you are interested in the plane it is on you tube (Rogers Eindecker) it aint fast !!!! Again thanks all
  5. Thanks very much for that, I will have a play. I have never stripped an engine since I was a kid. Must remember to have a clean/clear bench area ,now that is difficult !!!!😕
  6. Right Jon will have a play prob tonight.. . Edited By Roger 2 on 25/03/2015 14:07:44
  7. HI all To recap I never use castor based fuel even in 2 strokes, always whatever engine, Irvine Contest 10. I am not a needle valve tweeker, set it up, peak revs, back it off and ensure tick over is smokey. I am thinking something seriously duff ( a polite word!!). I first noticed it when I noticed "dirt " in my fuel bottle, I use exhaust pressure to pressurise the tank and drain off at the end of flying and run off the fuel . So bits were getting from the exhaust into the tank. So which bit do I start on main bearings. Or the head as suggested? Seems odd for once to try and repair an engine rather than search for the bits and buy new. Edited By Roger 2 on 25/03/2015 13:55:56
  8. Hi all, The motor is mounted inverted in a WW1 type plane and has always run well, I have always ensured it was running rich, smokey on low revs etc. I have never run it lean, the plane is a typical WW1 lots of wires and wind resistance so the motor has to work fairly hard in a wind. It has also started to change engine note in flight. Suggestions on where to start and what to dismantle first, I am a reasonably mechanically minded "crinkley." cheers Roger
  9. Hi all This is my latest  model it is a Top Flite Elder 40. I didn't like the suggested decals etc and so made it up as an Eindecker. I am pleased with the result and   ( I think )   it looks good in the air. Edited By Roger 2 on 13/08/2014 10:24:05
  10. This is my latest plane an Elder 40 as decorated as a look-alike Eindecker, landing at my clubs field.

  13. I think slope soaring is a superb extension of model flying. We spend 3months or so each year in France and I always take a glider with me. My all time favourite location is the Dune du Pyla, I could just sit there and enjoy the views. Roger
  14. Looks great Jack. Got to ask, any funnies from your mates like " Yer forgot the tail " etc...etc Roger
  15. Hmmm is all I'm saying!! Cheers Kingkade Roger
  16. I don't know what deters the little blighters, but I do know what attracts them.....ME!!!! A few weeks ago I had one sat on my thumb as I was flying my DB Moth, now that was interesting as I shouted to others get the so and so thing off. The club members seemed to find it funny. Roger
  17. I use a large soldering iron (an old one with a 1/2' bit) Wickes sell "Active Flux Paste" for plumbing. It is awhite paste and works like a charm with standard or cored solder. I usually use carefully cleaned copper or fuse wire and have never had a problem Roger
  18. Hi all I have flown since the 70's, starting with a 27 Mhz Mc Gregor system . When 35Mhz came in I settled with Futaba and have never looked back. I now fly Futaba 2.4 Ghz and absolutely trust it, I use the FAAST system. Cheers Roger
  19. My basic answer is dont ever fly though the sun, if you do, as above close one eye. The only other option we used to use, was a large sheet of exposed X-ray film or the like on a pole, you stand so that if say you are landing through the sun, when you turn that way the film filters the bright light and you are not blinded. Cheers Roger
  20. Cymaz said that it was cheaper to buy rtf than build, one of the lads at the club said similar, he said I cannot afford same as you to buy the kits so I get rtf. Ok I spend more than him on a kit and it takes me maybe 6 months or more to build it. In that time the same person has gone through a number of "cheapies", if you crash some thing that means nothing and is cheap so what? Spend a lot of time building some thing, you care and will therefore look after it  and repair it if you have an "oo nasty" I still have a couple of planes made in the 70's still flying. Just a thought. Roger Edited By Roger 2 on 08/03/2014 22:23:54 Edited By Roger 2 on 08/03/2014 22:26:34
  21. Be fair David, Avtur only said he was a semi crinkley ......not a fully paid up member!! Cheers Roger
  22. Hi Dylan I hope you are right if only for the sake of your bank balance. I remember a conversation I had with Eddie from DB Sport and Scale, he said that due to the lack of basic building skills around now, he would need to make kit plans a lot more "extensive" to explain every step. This of course would add to his costs. Cheers Roger Edited By Roger 2 on 07/03/2014 16:16:58
  23. Well I think so Ernie Roger
  24. Ok I admit it; I am a crinkley. R/c aircraft and flying has been my hobby ever since I was a school kid able to buy Keil Kraft kits and balsa glue. My new planes are the boxes of balsa type, I enjoy the building and then the flying, I am no expert but I enjoy my time. In my club the great majority buy RTF's or E-bay RTF's, no one seems to build any more only the "crinkleys". I get told it's easier just buy and fly, I have suggested that to make your own plane and see it fly is a great boost, but the interest doesn't seem to be there. This senile warble came to me as I read the last RCM&E and looked at all the images of planes for sale all beautifully finished and ready to fly . It's easy you see, you don't have to put anything into it, just open your wallet . Am I also starting to look like V Meldrew as well as sound like him . Lol   Cheers Roger Edited By Roger 2 on 07/03/2014 15:43:37
  25. Looks a really beautiful build and model, even looks like it will be a great flyer. ONE THING!!!! Why is your bench so "bleep" neat and tidy...I'm in the middle of a build and here it looks like a nuke has gone off. Just jealous. Cheers Roger
