Olly P Posted September 1, 2012 Share Posted September 1, 2012 Hello all, I am planning to build one of these 80inch monsters over the coming months/years, and have started to look at the wood requirements. They are not very clearly marked on the plan, and so I have started putting together a list for buying of. I imagine I will miss a lot until I start the actual build. So for my first plea for help - has anyone built one of these? I am going to order some bits from SLEC anyway, as I know some of the requirements, and I will have a notepad next to the building board to jot missing things down on as I go. Olly P Posted September 2, 2012 Author Share Posted September 2, 2012 Well, my initial guesstimate order was coming out at the £100 mark. the order has not been placed - I will be working away for a while from next friday with no chance of any building taking place so no point at present. I will be ordering after I get back. The current plan for this is (even if I do say so) dastardly clever. I will be building one fuselage and 2 wings, 1 wing will have 4 motors, battery space in nacelles and ESC's, and the other will be for PSS use. I will note all the materials I use and where as I go so that future builders can put together a parts list. I intend to order motors and ESC's last as I will know the AUW hopefully by then. I also intend to order a lot of lipos (using 4 per flight....) hopefully HK UK/GS etc will have good stock levels of them! Olly Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Thanks Dave, this morning when I searched google images for "Chris Golds TB-3 " I got no pictures of a plane but a nice picture of beach vollyball girls. I posted it, and it was deleted. I plan to upgrade and house the lipo and ESC for each motor in the nacelles, with a seperate flight pack in the fuselage. The difficult bit, looking at the plan, will be the wing mounting. This will probably only be difficult due to the way the plan is drawn, but I'm sure I'll manage. I will be ordering the wood in about 3 weeks, as I'm working away until then so no point having the wood! As I say, power purchasing will be done after I have got her part built, so I can get an idea of weights - even if I just get a single wing outer, single nacelle and fuselage done, it should allow mw to calculate, and then add some for covering and scale detail! Olly P Posted March 25, 2013 Author Share Posted March 25, 2013 Fats - no! I am currently planning on building at least 3 of these babies though! Shed build will have to be complete before I look at them again, as that is where the build will be taking place. I need to refurbish some of the existing fleet, do some repairs and work so I have a couple of power and a couple of PSS hacks, then I'll be getting stuck into this. The only other serious draw on time will be the new sprog who is due very soon and may slow things up for a while. So, the 3 I plan to build: firstly a power version with upgraded power sources as mentioned above, secondly a pure PSS version, probably with a modified section and other changes to make more 'slope friendly' I will discuss these in this thread when I do V2, and thirdly the version to support the SPB modifications with appropriate attachement plates for the fighters. I aim to have the first one maidened (and that might be the PSS one, as this should be cheaper) by the new year - but all depends on funds and time with the new nipper. IIRC he's had several models published that featured foam covered with brown paper including a 90" span Lancaster that accompanied an article in RCM&E explaining his brown paper & foam technique. PatMc Posted March 25, 2013 Share Posted March 25, 2013 You could save youself a lot of time & money by building it from foam & brown paper. One of my clubmates specialises in building scale models to his own design. The wings are from poly foam covered in brown paper, the fuselages usually have a basic balsa frame with slabs of foam stuck to them then carved & sanded to shape before being covered with paper. I think he uses mainly pink foam. Here's some of examples of his handiwork. The models in these photos all use 400 brushed can motors. He also once built a largish ic powered Ju 52 using the same foam & paper method but instead of brown paper he used corrugated cardbord. The outer surface was stripped back so that the exposed corrugations very convincingly simulated the corrugated metal of the full size. I want to build one as plan and then look at foam, I would need to make myself a foam cutter to do it so that is possible for my longer term builds. I will therefore try building one of the I-16 'parasites' converted to low weight electric and RC for indoor flying to see how i get on and to get my modelling eye back in (hopefully a quick build). The weight of the original with nicads and can motors, but a single speed controller was 5lb 4oz. Therefore I am going to use this as a 'threoretical' max weight to base the power train on, so scale moels approx 80w/lb, however I plan to add 2 draggy parasite fighters to this one eventually and the extra fixing points etc will add weight also, therefore, I think I will go with 100w/lb plus a little headroom. 600W seems ideal. this is a 4 engined beast so 600/ 4 = 150w per motor. The works on the house do continue and budget is limited, however I plan to start by making myself a nice HWC for foam, and I already have a power supply I can use. Olly P Posted May 9, 2014 Author Share Posted May 9, 2014 Right, again a fair while since an update, but here it comes: Hot wire cutter is the first thing to build, followed by getting hold of some EPS or XPS foam to cut. The wings are essentially in 5 sections, a center parallel section, a slightly tapered section out to the second nacelle, then a similar tapered section but with the ailerons, leading to a blunt end to attach the ailerons onto. I would hope to get started on the PSS one in earnest, week of the 20th of this month, while SWMBO and the little one are away. I will loose some of the evenings as I have things on. The plan is to spend the Sunday from when I get in from work putting the cutting bow together, cutting the templates and generally getting things ready for cutting foam.
