Tony Bennett
scam paypal will not cover you if he collects. cash on collection is best in these situations.

Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Andrew, my advice would be to proceed with extreme caution here. As I understand it this sounds awfully like a well known scam. Guy contacts you - agrees to buy the goods. But says he can't get there in person - insert reason of your choice. So what he suggests is he pays you by PalPal - then his "mate" will collect. His "mate" of course will be him! He pays you, you check your bank details on line and sure enough the money is there. So when the "mate" arrives you hand over the model. Quick as flash - PayPal will be on to you. He has lodged a complaint against you, he paid for the model but you haven't delivered it. PayPal ask you for proof of postage - of course you don't have any do you? You don't even have a receipt for the model. Even if you did he'll claim it wasn't him - or his mate you gave it too. Result - in 99% of cases PayPal side with the buyer. Just as quickly as they put the money into your account they will whip it out again. And there isn't a darn thing you can do about it. Its a well known scam. Tell him to pay his "mate" the money through PayPal and that "mate" is to bring the cash. Also tell him you want his mates name and his mate is to bring some ID. If he's genuine that shouldn't be a problem - if he's a scammer you won't hear from him again. Whatever you do - don't just go ahead on trust! Paul Marsh
Just to put this into perspective: How many people would be willing to buy a model plane who works in an oil rig - meaning there aren't that many people who do that: therefore too much of a coincidence that he is unable to collect. It's been done before - all I've heard have ended in the seller losing out. Best this is reject it and get the person to collect in person and in cash - don't settle for anything else. They are all scams.
Lee Wilson
Oil rig shift patterns are normally 2 weeks on 3 weeks off so I can't understand why he would not be able to pick it up himself.
Pete B
Andrew, please read this before you do anything else! Coincidence, eh? Pete
GrahamC
DON'T DO IT. Let me guess. He offered to pay the full asking price without seeing it? He needs it quick as a present? It is a famous scam, and I've had exactly the same emails concerning a helicopter listed in the classifieds. The way it works is that they pay by PayPal and then collect the item. They then claim they have never received the item. Paypal tend to side with purchasers, and unless you have very good evidence that the item was collected by an agent acting on behalf of the purchaser, Paypal will refund the money and remove the money from your account. To check it out, all you need to do is copy and paste some of the first email you received into google. You will almost certainly discover that others have received the exact same email. Here is a thread I started when someone tried it on with me. The individual concerned had created an account here on the forum in order to be able to see details of sellers. I tipped off a mod and the account was cancelled.
GrahamC
Posted by Paul Travis on 06/02/2013 20:39:17: If he pays via PayPal your covered. Just make sure money is in your account and get receipt off collection driver. Not true I'm afraid. PayPal protection for sellers only covers posted items, and even then certain conditions must be met.
