Retractable undercarriage?

That thought occurred to me as I was reading this article.

As I see it , it could be quite a job getting springs of the correct strength which will do the necessary while making sure that the u/c leg locks securely  in either up or down position. Springs which are too strong could still cause the servo to be stalled - too weak and the legs wouldn't be secure in either position.

This is odd. I just posted this 5 mins ago and it just didnt appear ?

here we go again then

THis is what Eric means I think - this is one I made up for the throttle linkage on my Spit - but same principle.

I reckon Malcolm's comments are right though regarding using it on retracts.

Colin,

Thanks for a very interesting article. I'm totally new to this game (using retracts). Apologies if this sounds like a dumb question, but how do you determine what size and quality (plastic/metal etc) retract to use. I have aircraft with wingspans between 50" & 90" and have just received plans to build a 1/4 scale Spitfire. Does it depend on the aircraft weight?

With regard to retract servos the ideal would be a worm drive. This could be geared to give a realistic retract speed and would not transfer loads back  to the servo motor. It would also be superb for flaps. Perhaps someone knows of someone who makes one? If so I would like to know the source!
