Martin Whybrow
It makes me wonder that, if Lithium batteries are so dangerous, why do Boeing fit them to their 787 Dreamliner?
WolstonFlyer
Because they have a very high energy density. Have you seen the big metal box that the Dreamliner batteries are contained in? This is the original battery (that caught fire) and the new box with a 64Kg outer casing and gas vent line (the actual lid is solid)
Piers Bowlan
Interesting that the new Boeing 777X launched at the Dubai Airshow this week will have a composite wing but no Lithium batteries. A case of once bitten twice shy? Emirates ordered 150 of them!! I see that the Ethiopian B787 at LHR that had a Lithium battery in an ELT catch fire (burning a hole in the Fuz) has now had its tail removed. I wonder how long it will take to repair and at what cost? I can't help thinking that it might have been a write off if it wasn't so politically unacceptable for Boeing.
