Martyn K
Hi all this course from MIT looks very interesting to all you wannabe aerodynamicists and aircraft engineers out there. Its an interesting catalogue with many free courses for distance learning available. Martyn
kc
Free! there must be a catch?Having to provide personal details and photo ID would put me off. What do we know about these people?
Martyn K
MIT = Massachusetts Institute of Technology The worlds largest University... If all the students lived together it would be the worlds 11th largest city if you believe their blurb Apart from that I can't help, my wife spotted it and I have just passed it on. FilmBuff
Used MIT courses loads of times for business purposes. They're great - but you do not get any academic credit.

kc
Of course I know that Mass Inst Tech is a well respected organisation but who are edX? Their courses are said to come from MIT, Harvard, Bekeley U Cal and The Texas University System. Are all those universities connected? How come edX can give these prestigous university courses away for free?Look into the small print on their website small print which mentions payment and photo ID to participate. As we in Britain have to pay large amounts for Adult Education courses making them unaffordable to many people, it seems only reasonable to seriously question how & why these edX courses are free.Edited By kc on 20/01/2014 15:07:42Edited By kc on 20/01/2014 15:17:40Edited By kc on 20/01/2014 15:32:
kc
Having browsed through the small print it would appear that you only have to pay if you want a certificate, but it is evasive about how much that costs! But as ' there is no such thing as a free lunch ' it's worth checking carefully.... Frank Skilbeck
kc don't be so cynical, from the small print "EdX offers interactive online classes and MOOCs from the world’s best universities. Online courses from MITx, HarvardX, BerkeleyX, UTx and many other universities. Topics include biology, business, chemistry, computer science, economics, finance, electronics, engineering, food and nutrition, history, humanities, law, literature, math, medicine, music, philosophy, physics, science, statistics and more. EdX is a non-profit online initiative created by founding partners Harvard and MIT." The US Ivy League universities often have some very generous benefactors who having made it put some of their money back into where they studied. If you want a degree from them you'll have to go study there, but if you just want to do the course, but without being assessed then you can do it online for free. Great advertising for these Universities to an international market also.
WolstonFlyer
edX is part of a new learning trend where academic institutions make learning available for free via the internet to anybody that wants to register and have a go - cool eh? The actual website platform provides what is knows as a 'MOOC' - (a Mass Open Online Course), there are millions is not billions of dollars being pumped into this trend worldwide in an attempt to make education available to anybody that wants. Obviously behind the scenes there are huge government grants and massive kudos for their academics. The UK is probably 6 or more years behind in this respect (although the OU are probably the original forerunner), we have a platform called FutureLearn **LINK**
Peter Jenkins
This course is not from MIT it is from the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands - see the logo on the Aircraft - TU Delft and the attribution in the URL. Still, Delft has a pretty good reputation in the aeronautical world.
