Andy Green
Hi I think I fancy a proper thermal soarer for use off the slope. I want a builders kit along the lines of those produced by MM Glider Tech in the states, but this side of the pond to save P&P & import fees). All I can find here is the Bird of time. Does anyone have any ideas. Andy
Jamie sawyer
The Red Eagle pull out plan that was published in the RCM&E. Its a nice build Andy... **LINK** Or there is the Gentle Lady on this page plus a few more to choose from. Jamie
Andy Green
Thanks Jamie. I should have said I'm looking for something around the 2.5 - 3m mark. The BoT is 3m. Not against building from a plan though. I'd love something from the Hyperflight site but too expensive for an occasional model. Tom Satinet
Have a look at the wood cnc stuff from **LINK**
Jamie sawyer
here is a good one I have looked and its not easy to find a kit that your looking for. There mostly ARTF. The one in the link is to, but the Mystique has brilliant reviews and a proper fantastic glider from what I see. Why don't you try designing one your self Andy. I am planning doing my own design of a 3 meter glider and have already chosen the airfoil for it but need to build a wing. I've got a fuselage already and I will be making the wing to suit the Fuselage already so when I go up the slope I'll be taking 2 sets of wings but one Fuselage.... The wings I already have are full thermal sail plane wings like the Bird of Time. The new wing will have zero dihedral and more of a warm/hot liner wing built for speed and stronger winds. Frank Skilbeck
Your best bet is probably to look at the various plans ranges as they will have some very capable older designs, or how about a Chris Foss Phase Lift
John F
You could always resurrect one of the old plans from Outerzone, get it printed and obtain laser cut parts for a fraction of the price of a kit. The Aquila **LINK** The lovely looking Bannsperber **LINK** Kittiwake **LINK** DFS Kranich **LINK** Or the Schweizer, which is on my list of things to do **LINK**
Steve Houghton 1
I am going to build the Climaxx from Hollein this winter, which at 2.5m and a 4 servo wing looks the business at €159 Steve A470soaring.blogspot.co.uk
Andy Green
Some interesting ideas. There are some on my wish list too John, Scale one day but something more sports orientated at the moment I think. I'm taken with the Climaxx from Hollein too Steve. Tom Satinet
If I was going to build a woodie, ideally it would be a kit from skybench. but they are the wrong side of the pond. The Hollein stuff looks great and i've heard good things about the kits.
Andy Green
Just spent some money and have purchased the Climaxx. Thanks to all for your input. Andy
Steve Houghton 1
Great I'd love to hear how the build goes, or maybe even an idea to do a build blog? We see very few builds on here for gliders. I shall be purchasing mine in November. It would be sooner but I have car repairs to pay for this month and a weekend break to pay for in October. Andy Green
I'll do a build blog Steve, see my website for previous builds. Andy
Steve Houghton 1
I'm impressed I haven't built anything out of balsa in over 30 years so if I get stuck on my build I know where to come. Steve
Andy Green
Sounds like a plan, we can have our very own mass build of 2. Andy
buster prop
I have recently slope soared a Thunder Tiger E-Hawk which was originally a 1.5M electric soarer. I know that Andy wanted something of about twice this size but for anyone interested, a converted Hawk 1500 makes an excellent slope soarer. I flew mine for a while as a thermal soarer although I think its really more of a warm-liner with its RG15 section. I simply took out the motor, replaced the spinner and prop with a shaped nose block then covered it with fine glasscloth extending onto the fuselage and painted it white gloss to match. I used the same battery, a 3S 1300 with a 5 Volt UBEC to power the receiver and servos, It needed a little bit of weight to replace the motor. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it went, quite fast and with good penetration. Three 20 minute flights still left 90% in the battery. Just an idea for anyone with a spare Hawk 1500 who wants to try sloping.
