Simon B
Any advice on heading down there? I've de-propped and ballasted a HobbyKing EFX racer, which is ideal for up to about 30mph gusts and fits in the car in one piece. I'm going to a music festival in Prestatyn, so it was too good an opportunity to miss!
Andy Meade
Hi Simon, If it's a SW (good winds forecast this weekend, but looks a bit wet too) then you want to head to "Marine Drive", which is a toll road around the rock. To get there, follow signposts for the pier, but don't park there. Carry on up the hill with the sea on your right shoulder. You will go under an arch where you can pay the nice chap for access, then pootle off round the road. After a wee while you'll see the "Rest and be thankful" café on your right (it's well signed, can't miss it), and just after that on the left is a turning known as the "Tank track". It's ribbed, so check your filling before going up! It winds a little way to the top, then you will see the hallowed grounds of the Tank Track Car Park. As you approach the car park, you are more or less driving SW - the main (and bestest) slope is directly in front of you. There is an old concrete structure that you can pit behind, and you'll also see a slightly lower shelf in front of you from here. Walk left and snake your way down to it. I'd reccommend launching from there if that forecast comes true - there will be epic lift and probably gusting 60mph+ on the ridge lip, which will be a bit dangerous for the EFX I'd wager. Launch from the shelf, walk back up to the top - enjoy! Oh, and get some photos Here's the shelf, with a launch :
Simon B
60mph? Eek! Forecast didn't suggest that. Maybe i'll leave it then. I've got nothing that will cope with that...
Tim Mackey
Simon, just drop me a PM before you plan a trip, and |Ill meet you up there. PM me your contact number.
Andy Meade
You can pretty much double the ground-level forecast in Llandudno for the lip of the ridge. You can still launch lighter stuff, but you really have to get down to the ledge to do it. Also downwind / base leg landing runs should be kept very short, otherwise your model gets pushed back over the gorse and heather too far, and you'll loose sight before you touch down. Ask me how I know You could always go up and see what's happening? Might be a few guys up there if the weather is good. Tim snuck in before I hit reply - best guy to go up there with imho. Cliff Newton 1
Hi all, I live too far away (90mins) to waste a journey, can anyone tell me if any club membership or the like is required to slope soar at Great Orme? Cheers all, Cliff
Andy Meade
There is no club, and it is public access (Council owned, iirc). Just turn up and fly. 90 minutes? Is that all?! 3 hours for me and I still go up 6 or 7 times a year Edited By Andy Meade on 26/05/2016 08:53:
Cliff Newton 1
Thank you, Now I feel ashamed that a mere 90 minutes was considered a long journey! I moved to Wirral, very flat - I may as well have joined the Dutch mountaineering club, and am keen to revive my slope soaring. Thanks again, Cliff
Tim Mackey
Cliff drop me a pm if u want any more help or a flyng partner for your trip. Great name btw 😃
Cliff Newton 1
Cheers Tim, I'll do that. I need to replenish my stocks of slope soarers as I only have one at present (Wildthing) and would like to turn up with a decent PSS.
Andy Meade
Ooh, now you're talking Don't forget there is our 3rd PSSA meet of the year coming up on the Great Orme on the 11th and 12th of June. You don't need a PSS model to come and fly, and there will be some great models there (as always!).
David Ashby - Moderator
Hi chaps, I'm hoping to get up to the Orme at the beginning of Aug. Thanks for the guidance Andy, much appreciated. Apart from SW, what other slopes/winds can be flown?
Slopetrashuk
It will do pretty much anything except E to Se
Slopetrashuk
The main slope does west to ssw with a nw 100yds away and a walk uphill to a nice south bowl. A north to a ne will be on the pier side. A walk from the cars for those.

Slopetrashuk
Park in a different spot near the cable car lines for the n orth and ne but otherwise head for the tank track.
