Ian Jones
The Thingiverse website allows for user groups to be setup so I've done just that. There are some other RC groups in existence but they don't seem to concentrate on aircraft or have very little content. We have a growing interest here and so the suggestion in some posts for a single place to share our design seems like a natural progression of that interest. Please feel free to add your own designs, it's quite straightforward. All you have to do is register with Thingiverse and you are then able to add your designs (STL files plus supporting photos if you wish) and make them available to the group in the "Tell Us More" part of the design's information. So here it is: RC flying models
Colin Leighfield
Hi Ian. Great idea, I've just joined in. I haven't really got going yet because of the mad panic to get the Wicko finished, but I certainly intend to make best use of the Wanhao as soon as I can. BobW
I've dropped some of mine in there now that I already had on Thingiverse. More to follow once I've sorted the files and photos.
Delta Foxtrot
Great idea. I have just started up with 3D printing I will certainly add to this as an when I have something worth sharing. I like Bob's balsa stripping and triangle cutting tools, I will print these. cheers Dave
Ian Jones
Well, what a response, designs added already and lots of registrations coming in. Marvellous!
MaL
Remixed the balsa triangular strip cutter by workmanbob to include two holes let into the body to store the inserts
BobW
Nice, I like it
Ian Jones
Another remix. I printed a couple of transmitter guards and scaled them up a little to fit my Hitec Eclipse 7 & Eclipse 7 Pro. I then added in the bridge to make them more secure. Needless to say the design is now at RC flying models. MaL
Tool for finding the centre of balsa planks, simple, small, and quick to print!! https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2199356 Edited By MaL on 20/05/2017 21:32:
will -0
Mal, you might want to have a quiet word with your balsa supplier or your models might end up heavier than expected
MaL
main spar for a quarter scale Antonov An-225 Mriya perhaps...... Edited By MaL on 22/05/2017 16:45:
MaL
Latest project to keep me busy.... Designed by taking measurements from a free plan on Aerofred.com **LINK**
Colin Leighfield
Hi MaL. Are you simply substituting printed parts for the balsa shown on the plan? I note that Aerofred is now showing designs specifically for 3D printing. Very interesting.
MaL
Hi Colin, I wanted the exercise in using the design software with the intention of printing the formers and using balsa for the stringers, covering with tissue and dope but I now think it would be better to print the stringers too and leave it as just the framework without a covering - perhaps other designs later as well.... formers printed.. Wings..... An early trial... Aerofred is a great resource for plans isn't it!!
Mowerman
That is looking good but I can't help feeling ,why? Apart from an exercise in using the system how would it compare with balsa weight wise and how much would it cost to print. Notice I am ignoring the design/drawing time This is not a criticism, just interested and intrigued.
MaL
It will certainly be heavier and less versatile than balsa for production of a flying model at this scale. I printed the 5 cylinder radial on thingverse a while ago (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:52769) and I fancied having a go at printing something else that I thought would be a nice display piece. If you are thinking of producing an actual flying 3d printed model I would suggest the guys at 3dlabprint.com would be a good place to start....I'm contemplating buying their Stearman, just printing out the test piece as I type The cost of the pla would be insignificant..less than 50p. Colin Leighfield
Hi MaL. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! It's the best way to find out, isn't it? Interested to see the way that Tony Bennett has used 3D printing for key components along with Depron for a great result, see his post today.
