Hinges

Hi Guys, I have just started to assemble an Acro Wot. The hinges are a loose fit until glued in, however I notice that each hinge has a small pre cut slot. My question is this, are the hinges glued in with this small slot parrarel with the trailing edges or at ninety degrees to the trailing edge ? Hope this makes sense

If these are the furry type hinges, they go at 90 Deg o the trailing edge, the idea is to dry fit the hinges to both surfaces (use a pin to keep them spaced evenly between the surfaces), then apply thin cyano to both sides the slot allows the cyano to run into the hinge and then wick out along the furry surface to give a good bond.

Hi Frank Thanks for that but does the small slot in the hinge run parrale with the trailing cos the hinge can go in one of two ways

If i remember correctly the small slot goes into the wing or trailing edge to give the CA more area to work with

I assembled one of these a year ago - a balsa ARTF Acro Wot. The hinge goes in with the slot perpendicular (i.e. 90 deg) to the hinge-line - so that it helps carry the thin CA down into the slot. I also recall that the method is to CA the hinges into the fixed part (e.g. fin) first, then offer up the moving part (e.g. rudder) with all hinges inserted and CA them into place.

I think that's what the instructions say (if you don't have the hard copy with the kit, then see the Ripmax website for a pdf version).

The other thing to say is check the slots are all clear and the offer up the parts with all the hinges dry at first to check fit. Any blocked pre-cut slots can be relieved with a scalpel.

Also, clearly, if you do wrongly align the slot parallel to the hinge-line, then you'll only have two little end bits of thin fuzzy material flexing as a hinge - considerably weaker!
