Martin Levy
Hope someone can help with this one. I am building a Solane Bullet and the wing ribs are curved on top and bottom. Therefore the bottom spars will not be touching the work surface and cannot therefore be pinned down. How can I ensure accuracy or is it a case of fitting the top spars first? even then how can I be sure the whole thing is straight? any help appreciated. Martin Harris - Moderator
Morane Bullet? Best way might be if the ribs can incorporate jigging tabs. Is this a kit or a plan build?
Martin Levy
Hi Martin This is a scratch build and I have already cut the ribs
DDH
All Square Wing Rib Building Gauge from SLEC, who state: “This ensures those ribs are perfectly upright & square on the building board. Easy to use & slotted for 1/16 x 3/32 x 1/8 (1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm). It also acts as a double thickness gauge.” 4 per Pkt – not cheap at £1.99 though. Martin Harris - Moderator
How about using "false spars" under the real ones - cling film should stop any glue migration problems when you remove them.
Peter Miller
Just pack the lower spars up with scrap blocks of balsa every few inches. Adjust thickness of blocks so that the ends of the ribs or lowest part of them touch the plan. If the blocks are between the ribs you will not have to worry about glue sticking them to the spar.
