Just wondering how you hinged the ailerons Peter. I was thinking of iron on covering on the top edge and between the aileron and wing. Also what size wing bolts did you use? i have 3/16 to hand but considering the size of the wing, are they sufficient?

Advert

I have standardised on MYlar hinges. the ones with bonded on tissue like material. The ailerons are then centre hinged.

These are the ones that I always use but you can buy them as strips and cut your own to length.

I use 5 mm nylon bolts as these will sheer without damaging the model. I have yet to sheer one in flight, even when only using one.

Well even if its slow, its still progress!
The wings are completed and the servos installed. Now just to connect up the snakes for the rudder and elevator, then install the motor, ESC etc.
I know it looks a bit bland in all white but I don't add any trim until after the first successful flight.

The Pilot is getting fed up with sitting on the ground and so am I.

If I told you of the clanger that I just dropped on my current project you would laugh your self sick

I couldn't workout why my tail component didn't fit as designed. After checking I reaised that for some reason the rearmost topturtleback former was an inch too far forward. Oh well, two laminations of 1/2" sheet and I now have a 1 1/8" thick rear former.face 21

The  TopFlite 63 inch Spitfire kit has a near-identical screw up - even the later 'improved' Gold Edition kit.

It has several others too. Anyone who tries to join the wings to the centre section will find it impossible if he has faithfully followed the instructions up to that point. Later on, should he use the suppled fixed undercarriage legs he will find out they poke through the top surface of the wing rather than the undersurface. And the wing is so thick they must have used the  Heinkel HE70 drawing  by mistake.

So it's not just you

That's the most likely reason Peter. I did try to keep the tail light but, although they're sturdy and very well made, weightwise a 4-Max motor is no match for a lump of IC up front.
I think I remember someone else on here converted the RF4 to electric and had to add a lot of weight to get the CG right.

Great job you have done on this model FF, fairings have always been the bane of my life. When you mentioned foam and filler could you expand on this please. Thanks

Thanks FB3, but I think a lot of credit is due to the designer!!
Regarding the fairings, being lazy, I glued a piece of polystyrene foam to the lower ply former then shaped it with a modeling knife and very fine grit paper. I wrapped the paper around a piece of plastic tube about the size of a broom handle to get the concave profile. Just a light layer of filler then to cover the imperfections.

Well, today was the day! Headed out to the field early, 20degC. Wind gusting to 10kph.
The RF4 took off after a short ground run without any problem.
One of my more capable clubmates took the fist few llights, and we did some fine tuning of the throws which improved the handling even more. It is very impressive in the air.

Thanks Peter.
