EggsBenedict
Hi all, Just introducing myself - rejoinjng the hobby after a significant break. I'm in West Kent - dad to 2, work in tech. More into the flying and tech than the modelling itself (time/patience the enemy here). Mostly electric gliders previously, and an electric Zagi (which saved injury to the gliders given my standard of pilotry!). Want to get back into this stuff - seems like lots has changed, so I've been reading up and watching lots of youtube of late. Lots of interesting developments in FPV and autonomous flight, which looks like fun! No doubt i'll have lots of questions, but I'll try to glean what I can from existing threads. One quick one/two - what are the little plugs on the end of various electronic components called (e.g. on servos, ESCs and now on LiPo batteries)? How are they attached - is there a special tool for that? What's that called? Cheers, Eggs
wingcoax
Hi EB, A straight answer would be "they are plugs" obviously different types. The wires are "crimped" into connectors which are then inserted into the plastic mouldings. The crimping is done using different types of crimp pliers, similar to (but not the same)as those used on a multitude of low voltage cables eg car wiring. Steve. PS welcome to the forum. john stones 1 - Moderator
Hello Egg, and welcome, no expert on the plugs, but a browse on something like Hobby king among the lecky stuff, will tell you the plug types, as will some forum members. Phil McCavity
XT and Deans are the most popular plugs and are soldered into the leads EB, at least that gives you a start point. Edited By Phil McCavity on 30/12/2020 18:02:
kc
Servo leads are often called Futaba leads, Lipo often have XT60 connectors and JST XH on the balance leads. There are other types used. There is a crimping tool available. Download the catalogue from The Component Shop and see illustrations of most ( patience - takes time to download ). Note that they also sell connectors with leads already soldered on and this can be easier - just soldering wire to wire and not the connector. They also make/sell adaptor leads from one type to another. Nice firm with low postage for small items.
