It does appear that things would have been tightened up across the EU whatever had happened after the referendum. At least we have a start on the rest of Europe! You're saying that like it is a good thing. It is.

David Ovenden
My recent deliveries to France from AliExpres and Banggood have been unaffected by VAT additions, customs issues or courier admin fees. So the EU doesn't have the same difficulties as the UK However, to send a 200g jiffy bag to the UK cost me over £12 and needed seven A4 pages of customs forms. Ian101
I recently bought some mountain bike trousers from Germany which I couldn't get in the UK. I paid £160 including delivery via Fedex and German VAT at 19% A few days after delivery, I got a VAT invoice from Fedex for £32 and £12 admin. I ended up paying VAT in 2 countries. That's life. My lad got what he wanted for his birthday and I got stung! You win some, you lose some.
Martin Harris - Moderator
I suppose the onus is on the purchaser to request a VAT free purchase from EU sellers. It was always an option for non-EU overseas sales as far as I'm aware - you often see the option on websites or retailers in tourist areas. Richard Marklew 1
This thread does make me smile. I am not sure what people expected when we left the EU single market (which is in effect what happened at 11pm 31st December 2020 GMT). EU countries now have the same status as the USA, China and other non-EU countries. Anyone who has purchased anything from the USA has almost certainly had the same happen - UK VAT and a handling charge (and customs charges for more expensive purchases). Sometimes we get away with it, but not always. I do have sympathy with those who have to pay the VAT in both the source country and in the UK. However, it is a lesson to us all - make sure that VAT is not charged in the source country or (even better) buy in the UK, if you can. Richard. Under £135.00 to the EU I think collected in the UK, over £135.00 no VAT in the UK but collected on entry to the EU destination. I am reasonably sure that is how it is going to work.
