slippyr4
Hi All,I've now almost finished making my home made field box, which is fairly standard fayre incorporating fuel bottle holder, power panel, model holding U bends etc.I'd like it to be black. What can I paint it with that will resist the inevitable glow fuel splashes?ThanksJon
David Ashby - Moderator
Jon, I've used Hammerite in the past with no probs. You can spray it or paint. Good old varnish works well too. David.
slippyr4
Hammerite as in the metal paint?
David Ashby - Moderator
Yes Jon but I've painted wood successfully before with it.
Chris Dickens
JonAs an alternative most arcylics are fuel resistant, a small tin from the local DIY shed should be enough for a field box.Chris
Myron Beaumont
Hammerite does melt over time on contact with 5 % glow fuel !I would use varnish on top of it especially on front end !
slippyr4
Thanks for the info people. In the end I used a matt-black general type paint from International paints, almost certainly not fuel-proof, but then 3 coats of a ronseal polyurethane "ultra tough matt coat" which seems to be a non-gloss varnish, but poly based. So i'm hoping that'll do the job.I finished the last coat of paint last night so i'll final assemble to box later and maybe use it at the weekend. we'll soon find out if it melts.thanksJon
Myron Beaumont
It won't . I couldn't think of "International" in my message but it's all I use & the tin is in the shed Pretty good on boat hulls too!Of course the ultimate finish is epoxy resin diluted (or 2 pack if you're not bothered about breathing anymore) Proper job !Balsaman. Phils
Chaps, I know its a litle late but for those intersted I understand that Jap Lac (available from B&Q type places) goes on a treat and is fuel proof. A couple of our members use it on their aircraft and swear by it. On their models its been brushed on but the finish is superb.I have not used it myself yet but perhaps some of you guys know more about its use.Hope it helps - cheers Phil.
