Simon Lumsdon 1
Have just picked one of these off ebay and want to convert to IC power, thinking os 26 fs. Q. Does anyone have any experience of this model and any advice on switching to ic power. Will the airframe be strong enough i also notice cowl is plastic and might melt from heat from an fs engine? many thanks simon

J D 8 - Moderator
I do some motor glider flying but tends to be electric these days [stopping, starting motor is a boon for this sort of flying] You do not need a lot of power to fly a motor glider. I have an old Robbe Sirros 110" motor glider powered by an early Enya 40 open rocker which will haul it's 10lb skyward. [long take off run] Looking at the VMAR's structure you will remove the motor box and after ensuring bulkhead is well attached I recommend adding a second ply [thicker] bulkhead on top to attach motor mount an help absorb some vibration. Weight of the OS will be helpful I recon given the short nose. Keep exhaust clear of cowl and you should be good. Some "rhino" tape with the weave inside can reenforce a flimsy cowl. Simon Lumsdon 1
Thanks JD, yes that all makes sense, i always reinforce firewalls and glass the fuel tank area. Am planning an os fs 26 which should be plenty power wise. havent tried rhino tape, is that like duct tape?
J D 8 - Moderator
Similar but the cross weave in the tape is much more coarse and visible. Rhino is just one maker of it like Gorilla. Cross weave filament tape is probably a better description.
