chris collis
Does anyone know where I can obtain a small amount of etching fluid? I have used Primol from Solafilm for many years as a base coat before painting, mainly for warbirds and it works well. Also in time the paint wears away or chips on the likes of leading wing edges to give the model an authentic and worn look. I always cover my models in silver solafilm so it looks like the aluminium is showing when the paint chips.
Rich Griff
Etch primer ?
Engine Doctor
Hi Rich .Etch primer is primarily used to etch onto metal substrates especially aluminium . Chris . Plastic bumper primer/adhesion enhancer might do the job. Its clear like prymol comes in aerosol and silver dhould show through the same when scraped or chipped. Never tried it on polyester covering . Only efer found prymol any good on polypropelene covering (Solarfilm original )
chris collis
Have never thought of using aerosol as I’ve always brushed it on as I’ve nowhere to safely spray except in the garden.Primol seems to work ok on most plastic coverings.many thanks for your thoughts. You may be able to buy plastic bumper primer in can at a car paint factor. Ask for suitable thinner for brushing. Just checked Solarfilm website and Prymol isnt mentioned. There must be loads of tins lying around . Might be worth an add ? Looked on ebay and clear plastic primer is available in cans but cost is high.....£20 +per ltr and that will probably lasta lifetime. Aerosols about £10. chris collis
Will have to put an ad out to see if someone has some spare. I think a litre would definitely outlive my lifetime!!
FiddleSticks
Only etching fluid i was aware of was Ferric Chloride for etching PCBs! I haven't got hold of any since the collapse of Maplin which was really rather soul destroying..
Rich Griff
Wow, ferric chloride is pretty nasty stuff..
