batcho99
Cheers Mudflap. I'm looking forward to getting some air time on it. I'll get a few pics in the and a vid for you to look at soon. What to build next??? Iain.
Martin McIntosh
Only just looked at this. You may well wish to look at the photos of mine with retracts and only OS26FS powered. 3lb 10oz as against the original 2lb 6oz with seven servos! Cannot get it to stall even with full up on high rate. The pics are mixed with the 63" version-which is a beast, typical Spit.
batcho99
Nice one Martin. Your spittys look great, I bet they both fly great too. Mine does. I thought of a four stroke in the 46" spit but I had the 32 2 stroke lying around so it was first choice. The retracts are great, where did you get them from? Martin McIntosh
Further to my email reply, I make roundels from paper discs, each painted and then glued one on top of the other. Not that easy over a curved surface but is acceptable.
Martin McIntosh
Hi Iain, I used cheapo £9 retracts from ebay with a metal gear servo on each leg on the outboard side. Servo slow is used to give scale effect.
Shane Sunday
I just want to say thanks so much for building and going through the motions of this thread. This is my first full build since I was a kid and it seemed a daunting task. With the help of your thread I am coming along rightly. Thanks again for a woinderful thread. batcho99
Hi there Shane. The spitty flys really well, very quick too on full chat! I have a couple of vids but it takes forever to upload them on youtube coz the camera I use is a 1080HD and I dont know how to dumb it down a little! I'll see what I can do. Good luck with the build, you'll enjoy it. Iain
griffss
Sorry about bringing up an old post but just coming back to modeling after 30 years and starting this as my new build after a trainer. .I really want to add retracts on this model anyone help with a link or model number for a set to fit this model.Edited By griffss on 03/02/2011 18:28:
Martin McIntosh
Hi griffss, see my post on 3.10.10 on this thread. If anyone is interested the first wing I built for this had straight in-line retracts, not angled rearwards, and was tricky to get off the ground and land. I built another with the correct Spitfire geometry which cured the problem. The first remains as it was flown with four servos and retracts and is available for a reasonable offer. It is in almost as new condition.
griffss
Well I got angles worked out for retract now is it possible to get uc door covers for this or is it best to cut ply ones
batcho99
Use ply or very thin ally
Mudflap
Ply is flat, and difficult to form to the wing shape, ally is prone to splitting with vibration and awkward to glue. I would and do lay up gear doors with several layers of glass cloth. I tape thin clear acitate sheet over the area, then mark on the acetate the outline of the required gear door/hatch whatever, then a layer of heavy duty cling film (the sort used for wrapping palletts) then lay up about 6-8 layers of lightweight glass cloth. After a couple of layers, mark with a sharpie on the cloth the outline of the door required, using the previously drawn shape as a guide, when you put the final couple of layers on the shape required is sandwiched inbeetween, once cured just cut out with scissors or a dremel. Hey presto, gear doors that conform perfectly to the wing. Mud
Martin McIntosh
On the 62" Spit I used ally cut to fit inside the wheel well and bent to shape. Acetate sheet was then glued to this and cut to the outside shape. It has lots of `give` in it and conforms to the wing section well. Simple.
