  1. I am a print + digital subscriber and have been for several years now. Recently I decided to make better use of the digital element of my subscription by installing the Pocketmags app on my Kindle fire. First tried this some months ago and it would not work. Got fed up with it and left it alone. This week I decided to try and get it working again. Nope still no good. Now let me preface all this with a bit of background so you don't think I'm a total Muppet. I work in IT; in fact I work in a data centre and am quite comfortable with most types of computer systems. Long story short I contacted the Pocketmags support email address asking for help. This is the reply I got: Hi, Thank you for your email! Please install the pocketmags app **LINK** on your device and login the app with your pocketmags details to access the issues. Warm Regards, James Pocketmags Customer Service [email protected] Excellent I thought I’ll do it now. Keep in mind I said I had a problem installing on my Kindle Fire. The app is not compatible with the Kindle fire. Click the link above and read some of the reviews. Here are a couple: 1.0 out of 5 stars NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE By Danielle Jessica on 11 Jun. 2016 Verified Purchase Opens to a blank white screen with a tempting menu bar at the top that does.....nothing! Yup. No magazines to see here because the app, that is meant to work for the Kindle fire, does not work for the Kindle Fire. When is someone at Pocketmags going to fix this teensy problem I wonder???? 1.0 out of 5 stars Does not work with my Kindle Fire By David Verney on 8 May 2016 Downloaded this to read Athletics Weekly. It was the app that the link from the website took me to. However it does not work. I have emailed the publisher and await a reply. 1.0 out of 5 stars No Go for kindle fire By D J Gearing on 29 May 2016 Verified Purchase Once installed you just get a blank screen. As others have said no problems on my android phone or tablet, but no go on kindle. Of course I have written back to PM about the issue and it's not filling me with confidence that the problem has a quick fix. Is anyone at the magazine aware of this problem? Regards, Carl....
  2. Our whole club is mode 1 except for perhaps 2 members. When I joined they said we fly mode 1 here and as I could not yet fly mode 1 was how I was taught. I have been thinking of trying a tray for some time now. Currently a thumbs and strap man. Not entirely comfortable with that as I think a tray might improve my level of control.
  3. I attended WW on Sunday myself being put off by Saturday’s weather. As I left the site to travel home my overwhelming feeling was of disappointment. On reflection today this was mostly caused because of the tragic summer weather we are having this year which impacted every aspect of the show. Also from what others have said I also gather the Shoreham crash after effects are also took their toll. On another note what was DB talking about when he kept referring to a “trade show”?
  4. I bought one of the Go-pro cases for my JR XG11 and I also have a Peli case for my camera kit. The Go-pro case is of comparable quality to the Peli in my opinion. Go-pro will ship to the UK as they did for me. Carriage is a bit pricey though.
  5. I learnt to fly in 2011 with an ARTF Ripmax WOT4. Crashed it sortly after passing my "A" in 2012 and rebuilt it as the damage wasn't too bad. Then I found the bung in fuel tank hardened and came loose totally irrigating the fuz with glow fuel. I didn't notice this for over a week and by then all the glue joins along the fuz had let go or were no longer sound. I took the motor and radio out with the intension of throwing away the WOT4 airframe. I put the motor and radio in a Tango 40 (the one in my sig picture), but I couldn't bring myself to throw away the WOT4 airframe so it sat in the back of my garage. After over a year gathering dust I decided the WOT4 was worth repairing so I cut out all the oil soaked wood and replaced it with new wood then a quick recover of the underside of the fuz and it's back in the air again. So yes I still have my first model and I still fly it.
  6. I recently bought an APC pusher from just engines. Looking through the list they show on their website they don't have a large range: **LINK** still they could order what you want perhaps. Good luck and nice looking model. Carl....
  7. I'm very interested in this as I too have an XG11. It's a great radio with a poorly written manual in my view. I recently saw a "How to program the Futaba MZ18" book so I looked for something for the XG11 and found nothing. There are some how to videos on Youtube related to the XG11. Carl..
  8. I really like the look of this model and I'm going to build one for sure. This will be my first build from plan model as I've been looking for something inspiring and this is it. Carl....
  9. Thanks for the info guys. Not decided on which sim yet out of Phoenix or Realflight as they appear to be the best contenders. Have been busy finishing off my latest build (SIG Somthin' Extra with OS 55AX) and I will have a look around Wings & Wheels this weekend for sims. Cheers, Carl....
  10. I'm flying two models at the moment, a Hanger 9 Tango 40 with an OS 55AX and a Travel air with an OS 46 LA. I agree that there is no substitute for the real thing, but as I said it's not always possible to get some flying in with the various limitations life throws at us. All I'm looking for is the next best thing to flying for real. So thanks for the suggestions, I'll have a further think about it.
  11. Hi, I’ve had an “A” certificate for about a year now and I plan to take the “B” when I feel confident enough to do so. I also have a Reality Craft Simulator which helped me in the early days of learning to fly so I appreciate the value of simulators as learning tools. Due to work and family I can usually only fly on the weekend, however this is not always possible with the poor weather we have here in the UK. This means I do not have the chance to get the amount of practice I would like. I thought that if I used a simulator again then that would help me practice for the “B” and I also have a bit of a yearning to learn 3D as well. The Reality Craft Simulator is not up to this job so I want to buy something that is. My initial research suggests two possible candidates that could replace my current sim and be good enough to help me learn at the right level. These are the Phoenix and Real Flight simulators. I would also like to interface the simulator with my JR XG11 transmitter for added realism. From what I have read this should not be an issue. Any recommendations?
  12. Ha ha, I know who you are Hogster. If you are over the field tomorrow we can talk Travel Air tips. I'm waiting for a Carbon U/C to arrive for my WOT4, then I'll decide if I also get one for the TA. Carl....
  13. Hi Steve, I also use bulk rename utility for my mp3s and it's great as well as being freeware. I also use PZ Tag editor (shareware) that allows for the bulk changing of mp3 ID3 data. Get that here: **LINK** Even though it's shareware it does not stop working, just nags you to register after a while. It's worth the $19.95 though I think to register. Carl....
  14. Thanks for the encouragement and advice. I'm looking forward to flying tomorrow and I've decided to practice a few things that I've not done much of before. Am expecting my new radio to arrive next week. Have jumped ship from Futaba to JR after doing a lot of research and asking the other flyers at my club. Most of my club mates are Futaba fans with only a few using JR and Spektrum. It was after talking to the JR boys that I came to my final desision. Gone for broke and bought an XG11 set that will come with a voucher for a second free reciever. Will certainly do the B at some point. Carl.....
  15. I have been looking forward to the test for what seems like ages now. Finally the weather came good this weekend along with two examiners at the field, one of whom I had pre-arrangements with to take me for the test. What a glorious day it turned into for more reasons than just passing the test. After a couple of practice flights under the guidance of the area examiner I went for it and did the test and passed. Wind was 8 mph which made my figure eights less than pretty. Everyone at the field shock my hand afterwards making me feel finally one of the guys. The test was taken with a battered looking 2nd hand Nova 40 with an Irvine 46 mk3. Initially I bought a WOT4 with an OS 55 AX to learn with. After several months learning with the WOT4 I felt my progress was being held back by my choice of model so I put the WOT4 away after buying the 2nd hand Nova off Ebay. I knew I was ready for the test so I put the WOT4 in the car with the Nova just in case. After the test I flew the Nova solo for the first time then found the elevator hinges were loose so rolled out the WOT4 and took that up a couple of times as well ending the day as the last man flying while all the other guys packed up. My last flight on Saturday with the WOT4 ended with a deadstick that I brought it home with no dramas. Sunday I flew the WOT4 about 5 times and went home very pleased with my progress this far. Most of my clubmates have already given me lots of good advice about my future progress and model choice etc. Rather than rush out and buy a warbird to celebrate I’ve decided to take a different approach and I intend to upgrade my radio first. The battered Nova needs some TLC so I think I’ll have a go at recovering it as a learning exercise before flying it again. Meanwhile I’m going to fly the WOT4 and continue to learn how to really fly. I have a Black Horse Travel Air as an introduction to low wing aircraft that I hope to try in the coming months. As for the future, I’d like to take the “B” test in about a year I think. I’d like to thank all the guys at my flying club (Bretons MFC by the way and special thanks to Brian) that have helped me get to this point as without them I might not have got this far. Carl…..
  16. I ride a BMW R1100RS as my daily commute transport into London. Have been riding since 1985 without ever being without at least 1 machine. Currently have a new Triumph on order that will be my second bike / summer toy. Oh and I have a ZZR1100 C3 in bits as well that I want to sell real cheap if anyone wants it. Carl....
  17. Mine is because of a number of things. The main one is because I've been riding motorcycles for 26 years and it's a significant part of my life. Though I am not into choppers I am a fan of the late Indian Larry who built choppers in New York. Larry often referred to himself as a Lone Wolf. This was in part because of the distinctive style of bikes he built. Choppers that could go round corners and be ridden hard. For me it's how I feel about my status as a motorcyclist. This is because I don't exactly fit in with the general biking brotherhood as I feel I'm outside of it. A Lone Wolf.
  18. Hi, Thanks to those who have commented on my initial progress. Since first creating this tread I’ve flown 2 more times on the buddy system. My last flight was last Sunday in between the rain showers. In fact that day was supposed to be a summer fun fly day and BBQ at my club which was quickly abandoned due to the weather. I had in the mean time purchased a second Futaba transmitter so that I can maximise my stick time with all the available trainers at the club. So last Sunday by the time I got my kit out of the car it had started to rain and everyone else was packing away and heading off home. A quick chat with my trainer Brian and we decided the shower would pass so we could go for it anyway and have a fly. I would at least learn a bit about wind. Boy did learn about wind! The wind was blowing left to right and it made an interesting first experience of such conditions. One advantage was my plane was the only one in the sky which took away the worry of mid air collisions. I think we had 3 or 4 flights before the rain came back with a vengeance, but I enjoyed it no end. Turning into a strong wind was a bit difficult at first and my trainer had to recue me several times, but I think I made progress. My choice of a WOT4 for a first model was making me feel for a while that I may have made the wrong choice with it. I’m now feeling a bit better about that now and maybe it is a bit of a handful for a novice, but I’m determined to get to grips with it. On a different subject I’ve decided I want to build a traditional kit for my next model. After a lot of research I’m about to get a SIG SOMETHIN EXTRA kit. So that should keep me interested when I’m not able to fly. Carl…
  19. Thanks for the comments. A couple of clarifications are in order I think. The buddy lead was brand new Futaba made that I bought myself on Saturday. By all accounts the club leads are considered unreliable so I didn't want to risk that myself. My instructors FF7 has the same square socket that in on my 6EX so the lead is square to square. Now that I know this “lag” is normal we can work round it as suggested by BB. That in its self is a comforting piece of knowledge. I was expecting this to be challenging which of course is a good reason in my mind to have a go in order to stretch myself. My experiences so far have only added to my hunger to do well in this hobby. As the saying goes “a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step” then my first step is behind me now. Looking forward to the rest of them. Carl….
  20. I’m learning to fly with a WOT 4 / OS 55 AX combination and had my first flight with a club instructor yesterday. Some issues with fuelling and a brand new motor meant lots of time de-bugging, but the OS 55 AX I fitted is a fabulous little motor. It took a while to sort out the buddy system between my radio and the instructors. This brought up another problem for the future in that not all the instructors in the club use the same make of radio that I have hence my future “stick time” could be reduced through radio incompatibility. My instructor suggested a possible fix for this problem as I was packing up. Finally handed it over to my instructor for its first flight and it went very well. I could see what this machine is capable of in the hands of a competent flyer. I came away from the field yesterday both pleased and disappointed at the same time. Pleased because my model did all I could expect of it, disappointed because it highlighted my total lack of skill in the art of defying gravity with a fixed wing aircraft. While driving home from the field I began to feel the same way I recall feeling when first learning to drive a car. The feeling that I had so much to learn and how could I be so very bad at this thing that everyone else makes look easy. I know now that my ability is that of “conscious incompetence”. Don’t misunderstand me though I had a lot of fun yesterday and I will be back at the field again next Sunday. I want to be able to give that WOT 4 a work out, but before I can I have a lot to learn, as well as an “A” test to get through. The buddy system was a bit “off” between my Futaba 6EX and my instructors Futaba FF7. When switching to me it took a second or two to transfer control, but returning control to the instructor was almost instantaneous. The area examiner was there and he tried the buddy system first with my instructor and felt this was rather odd. A couple of times when control was given to me it didn’t hand over properly and I felt I missed out on fly time. My instructor suggested that if funds allow I could buy a second transmitter to use in these early days with the buddy lead. That would mean no incompatibility problems with other instructors radios and once setup would mean I could maximise the use of all the clubs instructors. Just ordered a second Futaba 6EX for this very purpose. Hope it arrives before next Sunday. This might appear extravagant, but considering the cost of a top simulator this is a realistic option and it allows for real world learning. Carl….
  21. Hello Everyone, My name is Carl and I have dipped in and out of RC modelling since I was a schoolboy. My first models were boats and I was a member of my local club which at the time was called the Victoria Model Steamboat club. At this time I lived in East London and the club was based on a lake in Victoria Park. I used to race “A” Class multi boats, which means they were powered by a .21 glow motor. This was the early 80’s by the way and I used motors from K&B, OPS and Webra with radio gear by Sanwa. A couple of the club members also had planes and I became interested in that as well. Then the guys used to fly from Wanstead Flats which if you know London is in Ilford. I bought my first plane around this time which was a Superfly if I recall. It had a GRP fuselage and wood covered wings. I never finished it or the “C” class multi boat (.61 size glow) I was building at the same time. I sold up all my models to buy my first car. On to today where I have got my interest back. For the last few years I have messed about with electric cars which are not that satisfying. So finally I made up my mind to finish what I started years ago and learn to fly. I’m joining my local club which is Bretons in Rainham Essex and I have bought my first plane. I decided on a WOT4 Mk2 with an OS 55 AX for power and Futaba 6EX radio gear. Some technology has moved on a lot since I was last active with glow powered models and some stuff appears just as it was. I had a Sullivan starter in the 80’s and they are still available now and look exactly the same. Radios have seen the most advancement I think. After learning to fly and passing the “A” test I’d like to learn some aerobatics and perhaps build something that isn’t an ARTF kit. Maybe a Gangster next. BTW I use Lone_Wolf on other forums for my motorcycle and car and it kinda sums up perspective in that I’m not a sheep and like to be able to do everything myself. Regards, Carl aka Lone_Wolf
