  1. Klm are ok. Best to ring before you order though. I was after some balsa from them but rang before I set off to the shop. Turns out they didnt have any balsa and the shop wasnt open either. Only for collecting prepaid items.
  2. Think of it as an alternative to veneer and it makes sense. It covers all the imperfections in the foam too. Latex glue is the best way to apply it as there is no shrinkage to warp the core.
  3. I've just sheeted some wings with 2000g/m lining paper stuck on with copydex. The wings seem really strong now and it was very cheap.
  4. I like to build guitars. This is a recent build.
  5. Absolutely and if you use brown paper you don't have a weave to fill so requires fewer coats.
  6. Yes please Neil. The Sea Fury is on my to do list, as it is to my mind, the pinnacle of piston engines fighter development.
  7. I'd be very interested to know people's thoughts on this, good post. ?
  8. I will do Piers, nice to hear that your grandson is hooked as well. Like you my hobby led into a career in aviation, I owe this hobby a great deal.
  9. Thanks for the replies guys. My original Prima had a Webra 40 and a tuned pipe, this one will be brushless. My first one holds a lot of memories, it was nylon covered and was a tough old bird. It survived a mid air and flew one with one half of the stbd wing missing to land ok. This was back in the days when I was a member of the Nene Valley club near Wellingbourgh. The great man himself Mr Boddington clapped my landing so I felt a million dollars.
  10. That's the one. It will be my second. My first was a gift from my late Uncle, he got me started in the mid 1980's. I loved that plane, such a great flyer..I am building one as a tribute to him.
  11. My mistake he is going with the grain, go Son!
  12. Hi Guys, Well I am pleased to say that I think my eldest son is a keen aeromodeller. He is two years old and full of cold, but it didn't dampen his enthusiasm, shouting plane! and insisting that I hand over my Svenson Prima fuselage and sanding block. Perhaps its in the genes? He needs to learn to sand with the grain though! James. https://youtu.be/831qo7nqymw
  13. I'm going down the foam and brown paper route depending on model from now on. Corrugated cardboard cuts well on my laser cnc machine too. So to to experiment!
  14. Thank you for the suggestions, obeche looks promising!
  15. This is a worry, what can I use to make stringers for a 40-60 size Hawker Hurricane fuselage for example?
  16. I hope the above post shows how good the Millinship spitfire is when overlayed on to the Monforton drawing (red). It is pretty much an exact match. I know that Rob Millinship had access to a spitfire to take measurements for the model and put countless hours into the plans. Of course I make my comparison with the Monforton plans whilst being fully aware that the Monforton is a Mk IX and thus has a longer nose. I have made allowances for this in the research. I like the Millinship design as it is simple and robust, in many ways a morphed Acrowot into a Spitfire!
  17. I have also overlayed the Ziroli spit on to the Monforton, that is accurate too. I plan to scan my MR plans and see how that compares, but being 1/4 scale it might be beyond my handheld scanner. I used to have a copy of the plans as a drawing file that I found on the internet, but I seem to have lost them. James.
  18. For what it's worth, I did a study of the DB and BT spots. I purchased the drawings for the Monforton spitfire and then scanned the plans for the DB and BT. I then overplayed then onto the Monforton. The BT is very close but the DB seems to be stretched in the y-axis. As the DB is a copy/enlargement of the Millinship spitfire on Outerzone, I then compared those two. I found I had to shrink the y-axis scale on the DB to fit the Millinship, which it then did exactly. The Millinship spitfire is close to scale also compared to the Monforton. I think it best to treat the Nijhuis and DB as sport scale in outline. Hope that makes sense! James
  19. I can only second the advice given by Robert. I had to buy a replacement control board for my machine as the first packed up. I went for the Eleksmaker and it seems good quality. My laser is a 5500mW, I don't know if this is good or bad or indifferent, but I went bigger thinking to would cut thicker wood quicker. The trick with these machines is to focus the laser correctly, this is the secret to nice clean cuts and thus nicely fitting joints. You will have to learn to do this a lot, for different thicknesses of wood. Robert, is that the Dave Phillpots Spitfire IX? If so, from what I have seen this is a lovely looking spitfire! Regards James

  21. I love mine. I use a program called BenCutLaser, this has more bells and whistles. A free download is available online as a trial, though it is inexpensice to purchase.
