I believe that at least one of our well known model fuel brands no longer do any castor content fuel, also at least one engine manufacturer advise synthetic oil only. Most of the guys I know stopped using castor content fuel for any purpose. I have used nothing but synthetic for a number of years and have had fewer engine problems. I honestly believe the current running in instructions supplied with a new engine are just "legacy" as changing the print instruction has a low priority as added cost. It really is the running in procedure that is important, not the type of oil as supplied with our main brands of fuel.

Don't know where you are Magoo, but have a look at various model show trader lists as they are going to be at some of the shows.

Hi Ken, Answer to similar tranny question. Yes you are quite correct. On the whole, one make of tranny is NOT compatible with another make for buddy box linkage. Your club members do have a strong following for Hytec and Futaba with quite a few Spektrum users too. Always nice to have your own model even though the club has a trainer model. I think you will find that you will want one of your own, then advance into more advanced models as you gain experience. Which you will need before you fly your big Biplane.

Ken, I mentioned my thought on Radio type on your introduction thread. I can enlarge a little as you mentioned your DB Giant Biplane for the future. Look to see how many servo's required for it as that could dictate the the Radio Model, f'rinstance, eight, nine, or ten channels required. As it is a rather large model you will likely find "modest" size and price servos are not the best way to go for it. Big models normally mean big servos. It will be quite some time before you will be able to consider flying it so a more modest ie cheaper/ second hand tranny will perhaps be a good route to go, baring in mind compatibility with your Instructor/s radio. You have in the Balbedie club guys who are experienced with larger models who can advise here too, See you sometime, Bob

Hi Ken, welcome to the ranks of RC Flying. You have certainly picked an excellent club to fraternise with. Learn on that slightly challenging runway and you should be able to take off and land just about anywhere. Bunch of Fearties did not fly on Saturday, I even flew my Ben Buckle "Novice" with a little PAW diesel up front. Sunday wasn't too bad, most that were there got plenty of flying in,,, except the fearties . The Saturday night WAS swinging with the band Heidrum with a practise drinking session on the Friday and a wind down on the Sunday A constant flow of folks learn to fly with this club, a great bunch of guys. Talk to them some more before committing to any particular make of Radio gear, better to match the guys helping you, mostly. Don't forget you need a great dress-up outfit to to win the Halloween competition.

I would suggest that Kevin's original post was a warning to plan ahead. There is no reason not to do things on ones own in most circumstances. I, and many others, from anglers to Full size pilots have been doing the lone bit for years. I admit I like to do things with some company, however half of what I have done in my life would NOT have taken place had I required company. Self reliance practiced regularly tends to encourage careful, not fearful, activity. Stay safe guys, and "think before you leap" as most incidents happen when in company with others.

Recently re-met a nice guy who couldn't quite manage the normal Scottish weather we were having at the Balbedie Model Flying Clubs' Midsummer Extravaganza. Well I have news for him,,, we did not like it either so we had a better than usual "P" is up. Must have been the right thing to do, he kept us company for a fair bit of the evenings. He missed the best flying day I even have a photo to prove he was OOP North, of the border. Memo to self, must learn how to get it on here.

Vindication at last. I bet that the possibility of convincing the proponents of the "water in fuel myths, plural" is still almost microscopically small. Shame that some new to Glow engine use people will still have to suffer the false beliefs.

A brand new RX battery pack cost me a total right-off. Checked ok before the maiden of a new model, then smack. The problem,, unsoldered terminal leads inside the pack, only held on by the heatshrink wrap. Dashed if I could find what supplier I had got the pack from either.

Feel sorry for all the folk with the serious disruption due to the bad weather. Also feel happy to report that near Fort Wiliam in the Highlands that we have had great weather for many weeks now. But, The MIDGES, they love it as they dont fly in much more than 2mph wind.

I am afraid that is an all too common occurance Ken. I most often just withdraw from a thread which gets that way. I got a surprise "elsewhere" in thier "off topic discussions" when this happened very rapidly. So I certainly agree with Solly.

The range of frequencies now used and the much better electroniocs have increased the safety and safe use of models fitted with FPV. Some "myths" did have grounding in practical fact, and I for one am delighted that the use of FPV has really begun to come of age. I am sorry that some, only a few, FPV users choose to flout the advice/law given for safe usage.

Use Tygon for your diesels as the fuel tubing normally used for Glow Fuel is unsuitable. Be a little paranoid about ensuring the Petrol you use is kept VERY clean and that includes the main filter/fuel clunk in the petrol carry can, as well as the fittings to the fuel filler pump. wihich must also be suitable for petrol. Many advocate a Felt Filter Clunk in the model tank. 2.4Ghz radios don't suffer from much interference from the Ignition System, Servo's possibly could although not too likely. Best avoid 35Mhz nowadays. Best I think to use a Locking Isolator switch in the Ignition power supply as it will allow safe priming of the engine and also prevent inadvertant bumps or vibration to change it from off/on setting I hope this helps.

Hi BEB, I know you did not want the hassle of modifying an ex computer supply, i can say that the time required to do so can be very minimal. Half an hour to one hour depending on how basic you wish it to be. Cost about £20 finished for 50+ Amps at just over 12v's regulated.

Although we have not been since the year before the camping "fiasco" both myself and my wife are very sorry to hear this.

Buggly Ugger it is not, sure rhymes with it though. Quite impressive and no way would I want one.
