Jon, I'm intrigued with your oil comments, this seems to come up when we talk about fuel. If the Laser runs better on 10% surely it is waste running it on 18% never mind almost twice the mess. A difficulty we have in Northern Ireland is fuel must be transported across the sea, to get a decent price we have to buy bulk (as a club) so our choice is 5% or 10% & oil content may be unknown (as some fuels will not declare it). 5% oil must scare some folks but it is interesting to hear an expert looking at it. I just recently purchased a second hand Laser 70 cheeply 😆 as I've been jealous of a fellow club member who flies nothing else. Mine, like his runs like clockwork and a beautiful tick over. Hopefully the magazine will publish you findings on oil quantity when you finish your testing?

Hi Andy, good to meet another flyer who can't handle computers 😆 Edited By Derek Stevenson on 05/09/2015 20:45:10

I bought a Seagull Yak 54 complete with a Saito 82b fitted at a swap meet. Looked like the engine wasn't even run in. It had a right angle bend and extension fitted. I was 3/4 way through a bunt today when I got a dead stick, on landing the exhaust was missing complete with extension. They are expensive to replace. Not a great day but at least I landed safely

What's flying over your house
Derek Stevenson replied to David Pearce 4's topic in Full Size Aviation
I was at Hickstead Equestrian Arena last Saturday when two ww1 triplanes flew over. One a Forker and I think the other was a Sopwith? It was more exciting than the horses to me. I don't know what airfield I was near as I'm from N. Ireland. -
BMFA National Flying Centre

Only a tiny minority in my ckub voted 5 for and 4 against. Most couldn't be bothered to take part. I can just here the non voters if the fees go up in the future to finance it! At least it won't be my fault -
Solarfilm? Pah!

I use the HK film and have no complaints, it's super value for money. -
BMFA National Flying Centre
Derek Stevenson replied to john stones 1 - Moderator's topic in All Things Model Flying
I was careful to say that I did not think the BMFA did nothing but I do think they have a problem getting it down to grass roots. To answer your question our rep. does attend and I do know who will be representing us at council level. It would be my feeling that to solve a problem you need to know you have one first? I hear many moan about the BMFA, perhaps you think I'm having a go, I don't think of it that way. On the main issue I don't think a NFC would not be of any benefit to me or my club. As for 2.4 it has been a great help to me, so far I've mainly stayed on 35mHz but now have my frequency to myself! I do have a 2.4 but still love my FF7. I think I'll leave it there, I appreciate you taking time to reply. Looks like you'll be busy for a few more days. ps. I have no intention of leaving the BMFA at present as I've been a member for 15-20 years. -
BMFA National Flying Centre
Derek Stevenson replied to john stones 1 - Moderator's topic in All Things Model Flying
Peter, I would think that lack of club attendance at meetings shows that many people see membership of the BMFA as not being relevant? I'm a member because of the benefits of bulk insurance. I'm a regular flyer at our site but don't see that the BMFA is a lot of benefit to us as a club. Most folk in this day when they pay money to be part of an organization expect it to benefit them? To build a NFC which I will never have the opportunity to use wouldn't inspire me to supply finance to build. That doesn't mean I don't think the BMFA does nothing, just that I can't see what benefit they are to me in our area. Could it be the BMFA need to do more to bring the membership with them in local areas? -
BMFA National Flying Centre

I'm a member in Northern Ireland and our club is affiliated to the BMFA. It is my opinion the BMFA is a far away organistion which I would have to get on an aeroplane to visit.. They supply insurance which I see as a necessity for flying models, I would not want the personal responsibility on trying to sort insurance for myself or club. As for a centre of eexcellence, I can't see any advantage to me or our club. If the fees go up to complete it, I will have to pay for something which may benefit some members who are within travelling distance but as for us on the edge of the UK of no signafinince. -
Good one John, but maybe hot cross buns?

At our club IC would still be the main power source although there is a constant increase in electric. Although I have a couple of electric power models I much prefer IC. I realize they are noisy, dirty & smelly (engines that is, not the club members) but there is something in having an IC engine purring along that the electric doesn't have. Of course sometimes they won't start but when they do and run properly it's bliss. I'm not in any way anti electric just feel that the two stroke, four stroke and petrol are all part of the hobby. I think the wife would prefer electric, the car would smell better after a day flying (and so would I)!!!

Election....Enough i have had enough!!!!
Derek Stevenson replied to Vinegar Dave's topic in Chit-chat
I can easily see why the polls could be wrong, it could well be why audiences selected by the BBC for (any) debate, are anything but balanced in their political or social allegiances, the criteria used for selection have bias built in, in a effort to reflect all aspects of society, some groupings become over represented. You've got it, bias in audience makes for better TV or the BBC seem to think so?? -

I don't care; the election is over now normality will resume, Its not our fault its the way the guys before us left it! -
I sent them an order on 25/03/15 and they sent me confirmation. I have still not received the order. I've sent them emails asking about the order and quoting their confirmation number. I have not received any reply. I am disappointed as I have used them before and never had a problem. I can understand production problems but not replying to repeat (or any other) customers is something from a business point of view I just can't understand. As other have said its a pity when you like their products.

With all this confusion perhaps I should still fly with my Futaba FF7 on 35mHz for another year? Was thinking about2.4 but never had a problem with 35meg, Perhaps 2.4 will get sorted out someday?

Fuel Pumps, Bain Of My Life
Derek Stevenson replied to Adrian Smith 1's topic in All Things Model Flying
I bought my new six shooter at a swap meet and thought I got a bargin only to find its poor, being a tight one as well its just breaking my heart! Must get a free car pump somewhere, I wonder how a screen washer pump would cope? -

Fuel Pumps, Bain Of My Life
Derek Stevenson replied to Adrian Smith 1's topic in All Things Model Flying
I've just purchased a six shooter as I heard good reports about them. My initial view is I'm not impressed, it's for petrol as I have an hand crank for glow. The six shooter is very stiff and doesn't seem to pump much. My hope is it will free up, just have to wait and see. -
Do you stick to your TX maker's RXs?
Derek Stevenson replied to David Ashby - Moderator's topic in Model Flying Polls
I always use Futaba rx with the FF7 still on 35mHz. I had an orange 2.4 transmitter given to me as a present and use it for the electric foam planes (fly in field behind the house). All my ic planes are on 35. Would have bought a Futaba 2.4 set but not willing to pay the price for the receivers. Would need 8/10 to change the fleet. Never had problems with glitches at the club.Only problem after 15 years was a crystal vibrated out of a rx in a delta at full throttle! No more delta -
Thanks to all who replied, the 91 is running like a clock!

i bought a plane second hand and there is an ASP 91 four stroke in it. It looks quite new but the settings are badly out. I would be pleased if someone would give me a starting point on both main needle and the slow running needle. Hopefully after that I will be able to tune to optiminum . Congratulations to moderators, no need for unacceptable language, pity we couldn't have this standard at the site. Maybe more parents would then encourage their children to be involved in flying?

Cymaz I bought one of these from Ebay and it works fine, gives similar figures to my hand held one. Edited By Derek Stevenson on 17/08/2014 21:10:31
