  1. I bought an HP multi function laser printer three years ago. I use it mainly for printing plans, decals and photos, in that order, it's still going on the originally supplied 'starter' cartridges. It started flashing toner low on some of them, for which I bought replacements but which have still not been needed. It just keeps going and going. The bonus is the water transfer decals are genuinely waterproof with this thing, where inkjet aren't. Epson durabrite inkjets are water resistant, but still not waterproof. Buy a mono laser printer, or shop around for a laser MFP, these days they are so cheap.

  4. Awesome pics guys! I'm confused by one thing though, in all the pics except the Vampire, I can 't see any servos or pushrods on any of the flying surfaces. The hawks, JP, Hurricane, Tornadoes. Have they been edited out or are they built internally?
  5. Could be this sudden cancellation is due to POTUS visiting from 21 to 24 April, so all MOD sites will be on high alert, of course that then will be used to conveniently cancel all other FF events.
  6. If you start with a three view and then draw your own structure, that's scratch building. I'd exclude ancillaries like wheels, spinners, canopies etc, though I normally make my own. Taking a plan and modifying to suit is I'd say part scratch building. I do find it funny when people post threads of their builds of foam RTF's My Extra was built from a three view, I made everything except the prop which was part made from two commercial props.

We spend many many hours building and then trimming our models to fly predictably. The majority of RC flyers whose latest RTF went in? Oh, blame it on the equipment. Nevermind your (sic generalisation) complete lack knowledge of aeromodelling or why they fly the way they do. OW and other FF events are very well organised. The only reason the authorities would have to take action is the complete madness at the RC nats where IDIOTS with UNTRIMMED models launch AT FACE LEVEL WITH NO REGARD FOR SAFETY. And when these people (mostly RC flyers) are asked to behave, the marshals are sworn at. Have a look at the numerous videos on Youtube of just that. And you wonder why the RAF are suddenly so risk averse??  Further, yes, the FF community's influence is huge for it's size. That's because PEOPLE ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTE CONTENT a bit more substantial than "oooh here's my latest foam PnP assembly"... Want to see a difference?   8. Been slowly working on this. Got the wing joining tubes all done, Then began skinning them, I did them in two sections top and one for the bottom, I found it easier to handle a smaller piece for the more curved top section. I used the PU glue instead of Por for doing the skinning, much less stressful with a bit of play to align things at this size than using Por's instant grip. Then lots of balsa leading and trailing edge sanding later all the flying surfaces are now done, And here it is for the first together shot. Once I have the rest of the lighting wiring in I'll add the bottom keels and begin skinning it all.

  10. Thanks for sharing. That's pretty cool. I wasn't aware of the Arduino. I'm using various LED's, resistors, caps and a trip 5 IC for my Impala. I'd have used your method if I hadn't already bought all the bits.

  13. Bandsaw. I have a scroll saw and would rather have a bandsaw.
  14. Started skinning the fuseLARGE! The lengthwise strip and the 6mm square strips on the formers are anchors for the 3mm skin. Each skin will have a 6mm strip to adhere to. I find this reduces the 'oil canning' effect dramatically. The port side skins are cut and formed from 3mm depron. The construction turned out to be accurate enough that I could just copy these for the starboard skins. The process is to run a bead of UHU Por on the fus formers, then to take the skin and rub that on the area where the glue is. That transfers it to the skin so that both surfaces are coated where needed. Then wait to dry. I mark a reference point or two for when it comes to actually gluing the skin on. This helps with alignment as with this glue you only get one go... The last pic... Algebra? Nope, servo extensions required!

  19.   Got a bit more done on the tail feathers. The vert stab was a bit more difficult as I had to work in the air as opposed to on a flat bench. Lesson for next time... I started with some balsa square for the leading edge and then added the ribs while that dried. Not in the pic is the depron that I added running between the ribs on the high points. Not for strength, but to prevent the skin dipping between them. I measured and cut the left and right skins and the pic shows how I form it by 'cold rolling' on the edge of the bench. variations of pressure and number of passes give more or less of a curve. I normally use UHU Por to glue the skins on, but tried the PU instead and I much prefer that now to the Por. The last pic is the tail dry fitted with a 30cm ruler (total span of the stab is just on a meter!) Onto the fus now.

  21. Hey Phil, I saw your Correx Imps, very cool. I've finally gotten back on track with this one. The past few days have seen the stab completed. It's the usual 6mm core with 3mm skins. I added a 6mm carbon rod down the centre as well as balsa leading and trailing edges. I've used Robart hinges (will do for all the control surfaces). As with the Bucc, I've sanded the 3mm skins and core to a streamlined trailing edge. I really don't like these chunky six to twelve mm trailing edges on models.
