Yes as you can see in picture 1 there are two brass tube inserted to prevent the fixing bolts causing deformation at the engine manifold interface. Also I have used spring washers on the two fixings to hopefully prevent the silencer coming lose in flight. Entire item is silver soldered given the high exhaust temperatures but a welded construction would probably have been better. First attempt on fixing the exhaust stub had a trace of lead on its surface and that came adrift almost instantly on starting the engine. To date I have only done ground runs on the installation but the construction seems to be holding up very well with no observable leak at the engine manifold interface. Possibly a good idea about a second fixture as I have seen other postings on this forum that report issues about vibration causing structural failure. Have shortened the exit pipe since the picture was taken so the lever arm caused by the rear section of the exhaust and exit pipe is I hope not significant.
-
Picture 1 was attempt No. 1 Richard, second version was half the length and the exit exhaust stub was taken off on the lower edge.
-
I made a custom exhaust from a oblong steel pipe Richard. First attempt was too long so had to shorten it considerably. I can post some pictures if you wish to replicate it for your installation.

What I have purchased is supposedly bright mild steel.
-
Thanks ED, will get some steel on order. Will need to ask more questions about the heat treatment required when I complete the lathe work.
-
Need to make a 7mm thick washer to take up the play between a wooden prop and a Jen 32mm spinner from JE. Am I better off making this from steel or an alternative metal.

As for the brakes being applied along with full power think the pitch torque on either the tail or nose wheel would introducing a countering force to the lift which can only be marginal given little of the wing would be in the moving airflow.
-
Anyone have a link to the mythbuster video?
-
For the plane to lift there has to be airflow over the wing and this airflow can only come from the airflow generated by the prop or wind.
-
Once had an an aneroid barometer stopped for air transport in the late 90's as it contained mercury. Tried to tell them at an aneroid barometer works using an evacuated capsule but was unable to convince those that knew better.
-
Think what is happening is that the airflow generated by the prop is generating lift as it flows over the wing hence the aircraft becomes airborne.
-
Would not recommend the twist and lock glow battery devices as it has a tendency to unscrew the glow plug. Result was a lost glowplug during flight.

How much did they lose?

Please don't fall for this one I nearly did. Text message read along the lines: Scammer: Dad my phone broke tonight so use this number until I get it fixed. Save the number under my name. Me: OK I will tell mum. Scammer: I am going now to get it repaired. Me: OK Scammer: The repair man cant fix it so I have purchased a new phone from a friend. Scammer: Can you do me a favour as don't have my mobile banking on my new phone. Me: OK Scammer: Can you transfer £840 to the person I purchased the phone from. Her bank details are ...... Me: OK It was at this point I noticed my daughters phone was on line so realised this was a simple scam that nearly worked.

Grehead46, out of interest are the ribs and other parts cut with a laser or by other means as all your balsa parts appear to have very sharp profiles and are obviously precisely cut. Continue to watch this thread with great interest as it is a true master class.

Think a system of country of origin would fool people living in America as despite being born in that country many still seem to like to say they are Irish or Mexican. Mind you if you say you are English that may offend some minority groups living in the UK. Perhaps we also need to invent a gender neutral term of a person who likes to fly and build model aircraft here in the UK. Fool seems to be appropriate. Spend a fortune to build a model then only to break it into many bits on its first flight.
-
Agree Paul, shame a UK supplier hasn't realised there is at least a small demand for replica vintage engines. Mick Reeves does a range of larger radial engines last time I looked, but nothing below 1/4 scale. Did buy a cheap 3D print of a radial engine suitable for my Puppeteer from Inwoods but never got round to using it. Did think I could print an image on a CD and use that attached to the engine shaft but could not get my printer to accept a CD despite it having that facility. Also closing of the front of the cowl would have caused cooling issues.

Have seen recently on TV other medical claims of the benefits from drinking the juice of liquidized pomegranate's, so as long as its not increasing my PSA quite happy to continue Graham. Another positive side is that it does not taste bad at all and the price of a litre of juice which lasts about a week is less than a couple of pounds.
-
Philip, found a couple of gaskets, so if you ping me your address via a PM I will put them in the post.
-
Well I may have to retract the above message as pomegranate juice does seem to work. Since my RT treatment in 2020 my PSA has steadily increased such that back in August 22 it was 0.82. Now it is 0.57 so I assume a year of drinking the juice does seem to have done something so will be interested to see what the PSA reading is after another 6 months.

Tim, this is what I built for my 1/4 scale size models. Width of the two balance arms is variable and the degree of tilt is limited by end stops. Worked a treat on a large Sparrowhawk.

Reality kicking in for drone delivery plans

What I don't understand is why don't kids play with them. Sure a obstacle course or a free ride on toy would be one idea I would have tried if we had them 60 years ago. Perhaps kids today a more interested in playing in the virtual world rather than the real world. Climbing trees and making fires seem to have gone out of fashion now. -
Have no idea now as to their location Philip. In the middle of decorating in time for a new carpet to be fitted so being allowed to play in the shed is currently off limits. Should be back to normal ops by the end of the week so will go in search of the items.

Well opened up the bush with a rat tail file and it now fits perfectly. Prop is near a perfect balance with the bush fitted so will now have a go at the second one.
-
Well the 12.7mm aluminium bar arrived yesterday afternoon so knocked up the first of the two bushes yesterday. Not a big job but made the mistake of drilling out the bar to 3/8ths knowing the engine shaft was a 3/8 UNC thread. Unfortunately forgot that the end of the shaft has a slightly bigger diameter so whilst the bush does fit over the thread, that's as far as it will go! Back to the lathe it will have to go once I have measured up the engine shaft. Do like this turning lark but yet to understand the relationship of the feed mechanism against the amount of metal it removes for each turn of the wheel as I find it difficult to see the markings on the tail stock and slides. Did purchase a magnifying lamp which helps but need to improve the marking on the tail stock for drilling precise depths.
