  1. As for the brakes being applied along with full power think the pitch torque on either the tail or nose wheel would introducing a countering force to the lift which can only be marginal given little of the wing would be in the moving airflow.
  2. For the plane to lift there has to be airflow over the wing and this airflow can only come from the airflow generated by the prop or wind.
  3. Once had an an aneroid barometer stopped for air transport in the late 90's as it contained mercury. Tried to tell them at an aneroid barometer works using an evacuated capsule but was unable to convince those that knew better.
  4. Think what is happening is that the airflow generated by the prop is generating lift as it flows over the wing hence the aircraft becomes airborne.
  5. Would not recommend the twist and lock glow battery devices as it has a tendency to unscrew the glow plug. Result was a lost glowplug during flight.
  6. Please don't fall for this one I nearly did. Text message read along the lines: Scammer: Dad my phone broke tonight so use this number until I get it fixed. Save the number under my name. Me: OK I will tell mum. Scammer: I am going now to get it repaired. Me: OK Scammer: The repair man cant fix it so I have purchased a new phone from a friend. Scammer: Can you do me a favour as don't have my mobile banking on my new phone. Me: OK Scammer: Can you transfer £840 to the person I purchased the phone from. Her bank details are ...... Me: OK It was at this point I noticed my daughters phone was on line so realised this was a simple scam that nearly worked.
  7. Grehead46, out of interest are the ribs and other parts cut with a laser or by other means as all your balsa parts appear to have very sharp profiles and are obviously precisely cut. Continue to watch this thread with great interest as it is a true master class.
  8. Think a system of country of origin would fool people living in America as despite being born in that country many still seem to like to say they are Irish or Mexican. Mind you if you say you are English that may offend some minority groups living in the UK. Perhaps we also need to invent a gender neutral term of a person who likes to fly and build model aircraft here in the UK. Fool seems to be appropriate. Spend a fortune to build a model then only to break it into many bits on its first flight.
  9. Agree Paul, shame a UK supplier hasn't realised there is at least a small demand for replica vintage engines. Mick Reeves does a range of larger radial engines last time I looked, but nothing below 1/4 scale. Did buy a cheap 3D print of a radial engine suitable for my Puppeteer from Inwoods but never got round to using it. Did think I could print an image on a CD and use that attached to the engine shaft but could not get my printer to accept a CD despite it having that facility. Also closing of the front of the cowl would have caused cooling issues.
  10. Have seen recently on TV other medical claims of the benefits from drinking the juice of liquidized pomegranate's, so as long as its not increasing my PSA quite happy to continue Graham. Another positive side is that it does not taste bad at all and the price of a litre of juice which lasts about a week is less than a couple of pounds.
  11. Philip, found a couple of gaskets, so if you ping me your address via a PM I will put them in the post.
  12. Well I may have to retract the above message as pomegranate juice does seem to work. Since my RT treatment in 2020 my PSA has steadily increased such that back in August 22 it was 0.82. Now it is 0.57 so I assume a year of drinking the juice does seem to have done something so will be interested to see what the PSA reading is after another 6 months.
  13. Tim, this is what I built for my 1/4 scale size models. Width of the two balance arms is variable and the degree of tilt is limited by end stops. Worked a treat on a large Sparrowhawk.
  14. What I don't understand is why don't kids play with them. Sure a obstacle course or a free ride on toy would be one idea I would have tried if we had them 60 years ago. Perhaps kids today a more interested in playing in the virtual world rather than the real world. Climbing trees and making fires seem to have gone out of fashion now.
  15. Have no idea now as to their location Philip. In the middle of decorating in time for a new carpet to be fitted so being allowed to play in the shed is currently off limits. Should be back to normal ops by the end of the week so will go in search of the items.
  16. Well opened up the bush with a rat tail file and it now fits perfectly. Prop is near a perfect balance with the bush fitted so will now have a go at the second one.
  17. Well the 12.7mm aluminium bar arrived yesterday afternoon so knocked up the first of the two bushes yesterday. Not a big job but made the mistake of drilling out the bar to 3/8ths knowing the engine shaft was a 3/8 UNC thread. Unfortunately forgot that the end of the shaft has a slightly bigger diameter so whilst the bush does fit over the thread, that's as far as it will go! Back to the lathe it will have to go once I have measured up the engine shaft. Do like this turning lark but yet to understand the relationship of the feed mechanism against the amount of metal it removes for each turn of the wheel as I find it difficult to see the markings on the tail stock and slides. Did purchase a magnifying lamp which helps but need to improve the marking on the tail stock for drilling precise depths.
  18. Been thinking that this is not the first time this particular Rx had an uncontrolled elevator demand. Just prior to building the Playboy I built a bird of time which during an early trimming flight went into an uncontrolled loop followed by a dive. Thought at the time it was due to a sticking elevator cable, but perhaps not as sure I used both the rx and both servos in this model. Will try doing a soak test to see if I can get it to replicate the problem on the bench.
  19. Yes do have centre drills Eric. Also believe it is better to open up the hole slowly to the required dimension using a succession of larger drills than the last is it not?
  20. Props I purchased have a range of holes sizes. An 18x8 is the worst at a loose fit over the shaft of an 1/2 inch drill which needs to go down to 3/8. Also the hub has several 3mm retainng bolt holes similar to that required for a DLE engine which will need to be plugged. The 19 and 20 inch props are better being 12mm shaft holes which again needs to go down to 3/8th. Could not find a tube that matched all the props so have purchased a length of 12.7mm aluminium bar just to try making a couple of bushes just as proof of principal. Think given the need to also plug the screw holes on the 18inch prop the best option is to bin it. Would have returned all three items, but given I paid very little for then it is not cost effective. So will use then as a bit of an experiment as to what can done with my mini lathe which gets minal use.
  21. Any tips as to how to verify if the prop hub hole is accurately centred?
  22. Procured several large wooden props in the region of 20 inch diameter but unfortunately I find all have been drilled out well above that required to match my engine. By chance I do have some copper bar slightly oversized to the diameter of the prop hole. Therefore am I asking for trouble if I attempt to sleeve the prop hub to get it to match the engine shaft? As a test I did clean up the copper bar to an approximate diameter and did note that the prop hole would need to be reamed out as there are slight differences in the prop hole diameter front and back which adds to the complexity. Therefore wondered if I did machine up the bar to form a sleeve then this could be possibly fitted by heating it up to red hot and knocking it into place.
  23. Just checked the starter that I purchased from JE and it is the 12 -24v type. Will have a look to see if I can find a couple of 7.4v batteries, but don't hold much hope as generally procure 3S types. Suspect 2 x 3S batteries will be well over 24v.
