Laser Cutters, any thoughts?
MikeQ replied to Richard Thornton 2's topic in Modelling Money Savers...
Hi The building board is a piece of B&Q 18mm conti board with B&Q 3x3/4 ‘finished’ batons to keep it straight. The Aluminium 50mmx3mm angles are used with some ‘jigging chocs’ that i drew up in Fusion360 and printed on a resin printer. The pieces have holes all the way through for pins. Also 3mm grub screws to tighten up on the angle pieces. The angle pieces are fixed to the building board by 3mm cap head bolts/wing nuts. You have to drill new 3mm holes here and there for each new wing planform but thats ok. its a variation on a jig i saw on Barton Control Line forum. http://controlline.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6631 https://stunthanger.com/smf/building-techniques/pizzaz-with-sliced-ribs/ A pit pricey, very heavy, a pain to store when not in use (although i have found some where to ‘hang it’), but builds very straight wings 😂. not much use if you need to stick pins in it though. I have other building boards for that 😀 -

Hi I bought Rons Sculpfun. Love it. Takes a bit of getting used to just practice really. Ive knocked out 4 wings since getting it. AutoCad and Lightburn mainly. cheers mike -
Weston made me a custom pipe for my Irvine36 powered Chilli Breeze off some drawings. I needed the manifold at a specific angle(s). Great job. Recommend 😀

Anyone spot the link between Ukraine, Serco, farmers being disinherited, and many other things besides? -
Any particular brand or model. Not all £1 a hair brushes will be created equal 😀

Dope and Zinc Sterate as a filler for balsa
MikeQ replied to MikeQ's topic in All Things Model Flying
Some useful info on Stunthanger using Zinc Sterate as a filler. Looks way lighter than talc. https://stunthanger.com/smf/paint-and-finishing/zinc-stearate I’ll check out the boat supplies for micro ballons. cheers mike -
Dope and Zinc Sterate as a filler for balsa
MikeQ replied to MikeQ's topic in All Things Model Flying
Hi Don you need to get out more . Microballoons at £10 per 250ml from LMS … i’d say thats pretty expensive. where did you get 1.5 litre tubs from? So you haven’t used Zinc Sterate then? Cheers mike -
Hi anyone used Zinc Sterate in dope as a home brew balsa filler? i’ve used talc (heavy) and microballons (expensive). Cheers mike

Hi for those that do tissue and dooe 😀. What dooe brushs or mops do you use to apply dope or banana oil? i use a 3/4” flat brush but can take a while to do a decent sized model. Any brands recommended based on experience. cheers mike

Will check them out thanks. Thanks for the recommendations.

Hi is it me or have RC bits and bobs prices gone through the roof, if they are available. Ive run short out of some long held stock and thought I’d buy some new for upcoming project. Anyone have suitable alternatives to Robart 3mm hinge pins or Dubro 3mm (4-40) ball links? cheers mike ps Ive seen the 3mm hinge pins sold in bulk packs ‘loose’. Anyone successfully assembled and ‘pinned’ them. Can’t be too hard but happy to see what anyone has done 😀

Hello John thanks for the compliment. I wish i could progress faster but i have my finger in too many modelling poes and a shorter attention span as I get older 😆 I’m like John Shuttleworth with ‘10 margarines on the go’. cheers mike

Minicraft MB450 mini bench sander - motor
MikeQ replied to MikeQ's topic in Model Engineering and Accessories
Hello Minicraft good as new. It was an RS 550 motor on examination. Closest I could get at reasonable price was this one … https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07GYQT8SD?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title Drops right in. Windings must be different to original as its about twice as fast and seems to want to take off at top speed 🤣 Anyway, sounds and runs super smooth now, at low to medium speed 😃 -
Hi on a related topic. Z bends in say 2mm … i’ve always struggled to produce anything neat. Like today. Commercial versus my attempt bottom. Are Z bend pliers really any good? This kind of thing https://www.rcworld.co.uk/acatalog/Z-Bend-Pliers-5537318.html

Hello I’ve had my Minicraft MB450 bench sander for 30yrs but the motor is on its last legs. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/minicraft-mb450-mb-450-bench-sander-267694901 Needs a flick to get it going. Could be the commutator/brushes. Makes a screeching noise despite blowing it out quitr often with compressed air. Anyone had similar issues and does anyone know of a drop in motor replacement? Must say, its been absolutely fantastic value over the years. Mike

Recommended wing section for 45-50” WW2 scale fighter
MikeQ replied to MikeQ's topic in All Things Model Flying
Hi Richard I was probably being a bit lazy and hoping someone would come back with a specific section or two that I can just select in DevWing and away we go. Its not a big deal as like you say, just about any half decent semi symmetrical section will be good to go. Just being lazy and its always worth throwing a question out there 😀 cheers mike -
Hi the 400 micron I used isn’t floppy. Rigid enough for what I wanted on the Canberra. 1mm would seem more sensible on something like the Loaded Dice mentioned. If its Park Flyers I would say 400 or less will be ok. One thing I found was that depending how hot you get the sheet and how well distributed the heat is across the sheet, you can go too thin in the middle when sucked onto the plug. Best get hot across the whole sheet. Probably why using an oven I was much more successful than a heat gun. Also, make sure you lift the plug off the bed with scrap balsa or something. cheers

Hi Nice job. I made one a couple of years ago. Half way down the thread theres a link to some decent material i’v used for canopies a few times now. Better than pop bottles 😀 One thing I discovered that helped improve suction was to fill 90% of the box with foam. Reduces the volume. I think i have about 10-15mm air space under the holes so to speak.

Hello both worked a treat. I had a couple of options incorrect re paper size and printer/plotter. Thanks for the help. 😀 mike
