  1. In my 4th year our classroom was one of three prefabs that had been constructed in 1914. The only heating was a coal fired cast iron heater in the corner of the classroom. In winter we used to wrap match heads up in aluminium foil and try to flick them onto the stove where they would explode with a satisfying bang. The more adventurous would flick pieces of pencil eraser which would smoke and burn in a satisfactory manner much to the annoyance of the teacher.

Each lesson started with a 10 minute test on the material learned in the last lesson, anything less than 90% earned you a detention. If you dropped a pencil you left it on the floor until the end of the lesson. The chemistry teacher was far kinder, he just gave you a thrashing with a doubled up length of bunsen hose if you misbehaved 😊 I got an A in both subjects at O level unsurprisingly. Edited By Shaun Walsh on 29/12/2020 09:42:01 I had a chemistry teacher in the early ‘70s who rules by fear - of being assaulted by him basically. Even the lab technicians were scared of him. I was in his class one day when he grabbed one of the more unruly members of class, bent him back over one of those high lab benches by his hair, and punched him hard in the stomach. The guy was a complete psycho, and had a reputation across the school and beyond. These days he’d be up on an assault charge, but as I say, this was the 1970s - a different time. I suppose that many of the older (male) teachers in the 60s and 70's will have served in the armed forces during the second world war and have been intolerant of indiscipline and used to quick and harsh punishment, who knows what they saw during their service!
  4. Posted by Basil on 29/12/2020 14:22:04: Can someone advise me if there is a way to extend the length of a prop shaft to enable say a cowl to be added in front of the motor. I currently have a motor fitted witha radial, screw on, 5mm prop adapter. Can I purchase an adapter that can be attatched to the current shaft so as to extend it's length? Or is there a better way. Thank you in advance Bas Hi Basil Can you clarify: What motor is it. By how much do you wish to extend the shaft?

Posted by Daithi O Buitigh on 29/12/2020 13:48:22: I had a Latin teacher who used sticks of chalk instead of a duster (his attitudewas that with the duster you only had one shot - with chalk fragments he had an almost unlimited supply) His method of teaching - I cringe every time I see the clip from Life of Brian where he has to write out 'Romani ite domum' 100 times (it brings back bad memories) Edited By Daithi O Buitigh on 29/12/2020 13:49:02 Yes, I think anyone who did Latin to O level had at least one Latin teacher who was just like the Roman Centurion, it brings back memories every time I see it. My Latin teacher was a good shot with bits of chalk too, it was the Geography teacher who liked to use the board rubber possibly on the basis that an artillery barrage had greater effect on the moral of the troops than a couple of shots from a sniper! 6. Posted by Lee Morton on 29/12/2020 08:49:15: Hello all, I’m quite new to the hobby and am on my second plane I recently got which is a carbon cub 2. It came RTF with the Spektrum DXS controller DSMX 2.4GHz. Was thinking of replacing this eventually but wanted some advice on best controller to buy that would be suitable as well for future planes I may buy. Also thinking of installing the flaps on my carbon cub and have read a lot about needing a new controller with more channels. I could be completely wrong of course but thanks in advance for any advice! The spektrum DSX appears to be a 7 channel transmitter so should be capable of handling flaps but if it doesn't have a 3 position toggle switch you are limited to flaps on or off rather than a wider selection. If the current receiver only has 4 channels you will need to upgrade it. The biggest disadvantage of the DSX is the lack of programmability. If you want to upgrade the transmitter, a Spektrum DX6 would be a good place to start. I believe that Al's Hobbies do a transmitter exchange scheme for people wishing to upgrade.
  7. Posted by Lee Morton on 29/12/2020 08:43:50: Hi everyone, I have a carbon cub 2 which I run on a standard 2200mah 3S 11.1V Smart LiPo 30C which came with the plane. Was wanting to upgrade the battery to something with a little more flight time. I’m quite new to the hobby so any advice would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance. A 3s 3000 would be a step up. You don't have to have a Horizon Smart battery unless you want the voltage monitoring function. The important thing is to make sure that it fits in the battery compartment. You will also need to check the centre of gravity as the battery will probably be heavier.  Edited By Shaun Walsh on 29/12/2020 09:51:27

  9. Posted by Bruce Collinson on 22/12/2020 20:00:50: Cricket news. The Indian Test team has been exempted from Corvid tests. Apparently they’re incapable of catching anything off a bat. BTC Surely a Corvid test only determines whether you caught it from a member of the Crow family?
  10. Not sure it would be advisable to disable the ailerons, doesn't look to be enough dihedral for the rudder to be effective on its own, compare it to the stage 2R which is rudder/elevator only.
  11. Received the latest BMFA news yesterday together with the E-flite catalogue. After browsing through it for a while I have two observations to make. Firstly, The range of Spektrum transmitters in the catalogue comprises, iX series, the new NX series and a reduced range of DX transmitters, only the DXS, DX6e and DX8e are there. Are Spektrum trimming back the DX range with the introduction of the NX series? Secondly, the proof reading must have been done on a Friday afternoon just before leaving for home, or even done at home with the benefit of half a bottle of a good red wine. For example, the UMX Ultrix (wingspan 13.5 inches, mass 65g) apparently flies with a 6s 5000mAh battery. Similarly, the Night Radian FT appears to have 2 2200Kv motors running on a 6s battery, it must go like a rocket. There were others and probably some less easy to spot, take the specs with a pinch of salt.   Edited By Shaun Walsh on 18/12/2020 07:25:06

I can see others if they have a camera and hear what's being said ? What about me talking, does it work without a camera ?   If you have a basic desktop you will need: Webcam Microphone Speakers Most webcam have a built in microphone so you could use webcam with headphones. What operating system do you use? Edited By Shaun Walsh on 17/12/2020 14:43:35
  13. Reminds me of when Dave Allen said that he was being interviewed live on US TV. When asked how he liked to relax he said that he liked to have a glass of whisky and a fag in his mouth. I may have paraphrased it a bit but the essence of the story is there.

  15. Quick update on my progress with the Polaris. Have cycled all the servos and so far they seem OK (famous last words). Have fitted the SK3 3536-1400 motor and after trying a number of props have settled on a Master Airscrew 3 blade 8x6 pulling 34A , 390 Watts on a 3S battery @12320 rpm , 1.35Kg thrust. Using the supplied 40A ESC. Have been fiddling with the linkages, all the clevises will be replaced for more robust ones. The rudder and elevator will use the supplied metal pushrods. I have found that if I replace the aileron pushrods with 1.5mm carbon fibre pushrods, they move much more freely but are a bit bendy so the pushrod ends at the servo will be 1.5mm CF changing to 2.5/1.5mm CF tube outside the fuselage terminated with 1.5mm threaded rod at the control horn, This should be flexible where needed and stiff where it isn't! Strobon light mounted under the servo hatch.
  16. Even better, there are 2 versions of the SK3 3542-1250 one for front mounting and one for rear mounting. Edited By Shaun Walsh on 07/12/2020 14:24:38

The stock motor displaced a magnet and stiffened up causing excess current draw. Voliteur 4s battery problem I saw this, hence changing the ESC for an 80 a job!. If you can barely turn the motor by hand as in the video I dare say it would fry even an 80A ESC The SK3 3542-1250 looks a good bet, 3S battery, 11x7 prop, 47.6A, 2300g thrust.

The stock motor displaced a magnet and stiffened up causing excess current draw. Voliteur 4s battery problem I believe the OP has already uprated to an 80A ESC. The problem wasn't the ESC, it was the motor failing when run on 4s and as a result both ESCs fried.
  19. If it will fit, this might work. 4-Max 3541-920 I have the 1070KV version which is rated to a lower max current draw pulling 37A on a 3S in a 1500g Riot. It will climb vertically and roll whilst doing it but probably needs a bit more power for 3D stuff. The 920 version is rated to 45A WEP
