  1. Thanks for the replies, a couple of further bits of information. I will check the KV value using a tachometer when I get around to building the model. When I bought the model it was free postage, wouldn't pay the £80 they are now asking. Will check thrust available and current draw with 2 and 3 blade props although eCalc results show that a 1300KV motor with a 3 blade 8x6 prop gives the best results on a 3S battery. If it is a 1000KV motor and it doesn't produce enough thrust I will just swap it out for a higher KV motor. I think the product weight includes all the packaging, the model certainly isn't 6Kg!
  2. I have a Hobbyking Skipper which is great for flying when the field is wet and puddled but wanted something a bit bigger and easier to see so I ordered a PNP Polaris Lander from Banggood, basically a Skipper XL which Hobbyking has now discontinued .Polaris Lander PNP The web site says it has a 1300KV motor, requires a 3S battery and shows it with a 3 blade prop. I received the model on the date stated with no duty charges that I know of so far, great. However, the little bit of information that came with it says that the motor is 1000KV which would require a 4S battery, there are no markings on the motor indicating the KV value. It was also supplied with a 2 blade prop. Have raised a ticket with Banggood. Don't want to return it so I hope its a 1300KV motor or, failing that, that Banggood can send a replacement with the advertised 1300KV rating.
  3. Grease is the word, John Travolta and Olivia Newton John would both agree with you.
  4. Al's hobbies, guy who repairs Spektrum stuff works there on Mondays and Tuesdays. Sent my DX6 off for a replacement gimbal as one pot had failed, sent on Thursday, arrived Friday, fixed Monday, back Tuesday, reasonable cost.
  5. Posted by Gary Manuel on 19/11/2020 18:31:44: A MESSAGE FROM THE QUEEN ----------------------- 1. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'colour,' 'favour,' 'labour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix '-ize' will be replaced by the suffix '-ise.' Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up 'vocabulary'. ------------------------ 2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as 'like' and 'you know' is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of '-ize.' ------------------- 3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday. ----------------- 4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can't sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you're not ready to shoot grouse. ---------------------- 5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public. ---------------------- 6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour. -------------------- 7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it. ------------------- 8. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar. ------------------- 9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth - see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion. --------------------- 10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie MacDowell attempt English dialect in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater. --------------------- 11. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full Kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies). --------------------- 12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries. -------------------- 13. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad. ----------------- 14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776). --------------- 15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season. God Save the Queen! I really enjoyed this, just one thing I would take issue with, point 2. There was a recent article in New Scientist on a piece of research which discovered that the use of filler words such as like, um, err etc. actually enhanced comprehension in one to one conversation but diminished perceived authority when used in speeches, presentations etc. I must admit that it surprised me as I get very frustrated with the overuse of filler words. I suppose that by definition just under 50% of the population are of below average intelligence and so need the gap to process what's been said before. I'm sure that, as aeromodellers, we are all like in the um upper 50%.
  6. I need a team effort here, I would like to produce a Covid related 12 Days of Christmas, to start us off, here are the first four days: On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a Barnard's Castle eye test for free. On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me, two vaccines waiting and a Barnard's Castle eye test for free. On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me, three tiers of lockdown, two vaccines waiting and a Barnard's Castle eye test for free. On the fourth day of lockdown my true love gave to me, four national policies, three tiers of lockdown, two vaccines waiting and a Barnard's Castle eye test for free. Please feel free to complete the remaining eight days.
  7. I liked the look of the edf wing next to their logo, apparently they will be revisiting it in the new year, too busy to make it available at the moment. Also, will probably order an exodus as I have the recommended motor and esc going spare, any excuse 😊
  8. Ok, an update. Wings almost complete, a few points of difference from the plan. I have added some TE section to the ailerons as I wasn’t happy that the top and bottom sheet join would be robust enough without it. I have also added TE section to the third rib bay for the same reason and to strengthen the root joint. The instructions seem to show the 4 inch LE sheeting extending beyond the main spar at the wingtip but the illustrations in the magazine article shows it cut off at the spar, I decided to follow the illustration and not the plan, the bonus is that the cut off section fills the gap in the sheeting at the root 😊. There are no details regarding the servo fitting so I constructed a box between the ribs with square section balsa to accept the servo holders (from Banggood). I will not add the top LE sheeting until the wing halves are joined and I will probably add a centre rib to support the sheeting aft of the spar. Regarding the method of joining the wing halves, it appears to rely on a 3/8ths medium hard balsa sheet in the space between the first ribs and the upper and lower spars, a support for the front wing locating dowel and the leading edge joiner. Nothing extends beyond the first rib on each side which makes me a bit nervous, normally used to a ply dihedral brace extending to the second or third rib. I will probably add a ply brace to the trailing edge and reinforce the centre brace by laminating it with some thin ply.
  9. Posted by EvilC57 on 16/11/2020 12:09:07: I treated myself to a new 6 inch steel rule last week, and noticed the label on the back of the protective cover it came in. The thing is, which do I believe? Is it precision made, or are all figures approximate? I think this highlights the difference between accuracy and precision. The ruler is precision made, so if you compare lots of different examples of this ruler they will give you the same measured figure, however they may not be accurate So you could measure a piece of wood that is actually 15.0cms long with several different examples of the same ruler and get exactly the same measurement but that measurement may be 14.8cm, so it's precise, but not accurate. Edited By Shaun Walsh on 16/11/2020 13:05:38
  10. Assuming that the residues left in the wood are the lubricating oil it would probably be better to use Methanol to remove them, not sure how soluble castor and synthetic oils are in acetone or cellulose thinners.
  11. Has anyone tried using Ronseal wood hardener to strengthen soft balsa after removing as much fuel residue as possible? I believe that it is epoxy based and would probably act as a fuel proofer too.
  12. Posted by Bob Cotsford on 06/11/2020 17:00:47: Looking at a few others postage for an RTF model varied from free from CZ or £0.87 from ES up to £55 from the CN warehouse so it may depend on where they are holding stock of individual items at the time you order. The point I was making was that the delivery for the same item from the CN warehouse has varied from Free, to £55 then £80, struggling to understand why unless they are controlling demand to maximise profit by varying the delivery cost.
  13. Posted by Shaun Walsh on 04/11/2020 15:14:31: I ordered some servo mounts/covers from Banggood China and they arrived in just over a week. I also ordered Polaris amphibious plane ( I have the HK Skipper and it's great but a bit small and quick to keep track of so I wanted the larger version). That is taking longer but appears to have been shipped after a couple of weeks. When I ordered it the shipping was free, I looked today and the shipping cost if I ordered now is £55!!!! Glad I didn't wait any longer. Just checked again and delivery is now £81 what the heck is going on?

  15. Also, the LE and aileron facings are tapered from root to tip, so these were cut from sheet after careful measurement.
  16. After much cogitation, the build has begun with the wings just in time for lockdown 2. Many thanks to barryt who sent me details of the wing jig which is one method described to construct the wing, however I opted for the second method which was to pin the sheet TE to the board and build off that. All rib positions were marked on the TE and sub LE prior to construction, the full ribs were glued to the TE first, then the aileron sub ribs and aileron facings. The sub LE was then glued to the front of the full ribs and the part ribs in front of the aileron were then attached. It appears to be straight! The only problem I have found so far is that the spar cut outs on rib 1 are in the wrong place, but only a few mm out so easy to fix. Haven't figured out why the spar slots in rib 3 are a bit bigger than the rest, any suggestion?
