  1. Full details available here: Tolerable standard guidance Looking at the wider legislation, I could understand it applying if I wanted to rent a property out but if I want to live in a damp, decrepit fire trap myself, I thinks that's my business and not the council's. Also, who comes around to check that the house you live in complies with all the legislative requirements?
  2. If you have the Office 2007 installation disc it will run on Windows 10, it's what I use on my Win 10 laptop. A good free alternative is LibreOffice. To use Google and Yahoo browsers use microsoft Edge to access the internet and download and install the browsers, you should automatically get the icons installed on your desktop.

Posted by Erfolg on 12/10/2020 14:14:15: I should have a external hard drive for the PC, this was permanantly attached, the PC set to down load a ceratin set of files, on a predetermined schedule. Since moving four years ago the drive has been missing, I only realised this a bout a week ago. I have had a search in the area where the PC is kept, checking every nook and cranny I could think off. It has gone, it appears. Now I am wondering is a external drive still the appropriate way to back up? If not what is? Then there is the issue of how much storage space do i need, as I have not got a clue, not even remembering the size of the now lost drive. The size of external hard drive really depends upon what you want to back up. Do you have lots of photo's, music, videos or other types of large file? As a minimum I would say 500GB, preferably 1TB.or even more if more if have a lot of things to back up. I have a lot of photos, music and videos which, together with other documents, are backed up onto two separate 3.5 inch hard drives which are in caddies in my desktop and can be removed and stored elsewhere if I go on holiday. In addition I have a second backup on portable drives. My laptop, which has far fewer files, is backed up onto a 32GB usb stick (low profile) which is permanently attached .and periodically backed up onto a portable drive as well. The first thing I did with the new laptop was to create a Windows 10 Recovery drive in case the operating system is corrupted, this is stored in a safe place, let's just hope I can remember where it is if I need it.
  4. Glad you got sorted in the end, don't forget to make a Rescue USB drive in case of failure.

On the subject of Latin in school, does anyone else recognise their Latin Master in the Centurion in Monty Python and the Holy Grail? I certainly do! When I was at university, a friend of mine studied Latin at degree level. We wondered what sort of job you could get with a Latin degree. He walked into a job with a software company who were of the opinion that if you follow the rules of written Latin, learning a programming language would be easy. Shaun, Please write out one hundred times, 'The Centurion was in 'The Life of Brian'. AAAAAH! brain malfunction. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!

A superfluous apostrophe. It's a pretentious sandwich. Objection M'lud! It's a pretentious (but quite tasty) roll! And a roll is just a sandwich with a lot more crust ☺️

  15. Posted by Ben B on 11/10/2020 09:00:13: I saw something recently that said when writing to teenagers or people in their 20s to avoid using punctuation as it would appear unduly formal and threatening. I ignored it. Sentences don't make any sense without punctuation. I agree re unnecessary apostrophes. Missing something out is ignorance or laziness but adding unneeded stuff is just wrong. My wife's an English teacher and collects examples and on rare occasions corrects then. In our local M+S they had a laminated sign near the tills saying "We do not accept fifty's" Our local bistro put up a sign saying "We have many tapas's". I'm no expert but would imagine tapas is almost by definition plural but even if it required making plural that's not it. Then again at the same bistro when I went in on a Sunday morning and ordered muffin and jam... They brought me a little pot of jam and a chocolate chip muffin! Actually the most annoying thing I find if Trumps hyperbolic use of exclamation marks! Especially in tweets! It's so annoying! It devalues them if they're use all the time! I wish he'd stop! Edited By Ben B on 11/10/2020 09:01:15 Similarly, how many people realise that "panini" is the plural of "panino" and that "data" is the plural of "datum"
  16. My daughter finds it amusing that I use correct punctuation in text messages!
  17. Posted by Martin Harris on 10/10/2020 17:03:30: I always read my postings and correct obvious errors but this is because I feel embarrassed if I've made a glaring grammatical or spelling mistake. I don't claim any more than O level English and I know that my grammar isn't always perfect but yes, it does grate a bit when I see some very basic errors. However, I recognise that some people are dyslexic or simply haven't been taught the basics and I realise it isn't fair to nit pick - although on occasions I might have pointed out where something doesn't make sense and commented for the sake of clarification. Good punctuation does make text more readable but I was amused to learn that the use of commas is frowned on when framing certain legal documents in order to avoid unintentional interpretations. Same here, I do try to make my posts adhere as closely as possible to correct English spelling and grammar. However, I do sometime despair at the standard of English exhibited online. My pet hates are "should of" instead of "should have" (how does should of even make sense?) and the use of the superfluous apostrophe, usually in plural's (sic). OK, I shall have to go now as my cumpooters' spillchucker appears to be bricken! (apologies to officer Crabtree) Edited By Shaun Walsh on 10/10/2020 17:28:50
  18. I was looking for something aerobatic to build during the autumn, the criteria were: Uses a 3s 3000 battery Low wing Aerobatic (sport not competition) Built up balsa construction. Kit or short kit, as don't have the patience to cut out ribs and formers. After a bit of searching I ordered the Loaded Dice 30 EP from Sarik Hobbies which seemed to fit the bill nicely. I ordered the short kit comprising plan, canopy and laser cut parts which arrived less than 2 weeks from order. Initial inspection revealed a nicely printed plan with outlines for all the laser cut parts which will be useful if repairs are ever needed and details of the materials needed that were not supplied, namely sheet, strip and block balsa, spruce spars, undercarriage wire, wheels etc. The quality of the laser cut balsa and ply parts looks good as does the (large) canopy.. The only minor improvement would have been to add somewhere a list of the materials needed just for convenience. Also included is a photocopy of the magazine article detailing the build process, a nice touch. Sarik don't offer an additional wood pack so it was off to Steve Webb's with my list. At this point I would like to thank the staff member who served me and appears to have selected the grades of balsa I requested and took a good 30 mins at the back of the shop picking the wood for me as customers are not allowed beyond the front section of the shop for Covid related reasons. Total cost was £70 including wire and wheels as my existing supply of balsa is minimal so I had to buy everything required. The motor recommended on the Sarik site is an Aeolin C3542 1450KV 850W. Now if the 850W means 850 watts then I think that's a bit generous in a model that should have an AUW of 1.5Kg! I have asked George at 4-Max for a recommendation and I think it may well be a PO-3541-1270 which should give about 130-150 W/Lb.. I shall post more (and pictures) as and when construction progresses but it will probably be protracted and sporadic.
  19. for RCFerret, it found me a motor on the Hobbyking website that Hobbyking's own search engine missed
  20. Posted by barryt on 30/08/2020 12:51:33: Enjoy the build Shaun. Post some pictures and don't forget to order the canopy. Let me know if you need details of Terry Westrop's simple wing jig. Short kit for the Loaded Dice 30 arrived today, left behind wheely bin in front of garage door fortunately it had only just started raining when I got home. Next job is to work out what additional materials I need to get, it would be really nice if Sarik could include a list of additional wood needed to complete the model, I would even buy it from them! Barry, if you can share details of the wing jig and how you did the dihedral brace infill that would be great.
  21. You could try discharging to storage using something like this: Discharger I have used an HB3 50 watt quartz halogen car bulb to discharge a 3s battery that was beyond safe use, but it would need careful monitoring of the voltage to take each cell down to storage voltage. If your charger has a "Balance" function you could use that to equalise the voltages but it may be to no avail if the internal resistance of each cell differs too much. It may only be good for low current/short flight use. If you have the necessary skill/tools you could strip out the duff cell and make it a 3s but it's not something I would attempt.
  22. There is something else you can do, make a claim through the small claims court, nobody in their right mind would want a County Court Judgement ruining their credit record for the sake of £144.
  23. Posted by Erfolg on 03/10/2020 13:20:58: I have come very close to buying a lap top, indecision has held me back. At present the decision is between a HP ProBook 655 G1 AMD A10 Quad Core - Radeon HD 7420G Graphics 15.6" Gaming Laptop Windows 10 or HONOR MagicBook 15 - 15.6 Inch Laptop with FullView 1080P Screen. I am not concerned with the Chinese spying on me, it will either bore them to death, or if i knew any secrets, put them back at least 5 or more years (more probably + 20). I know I threw one of my laptops out as it was lacking in the then ports. The HP does not have a USB-c port.If it does something more than being smaller USB, is this something that makes the machine already really obsolete? AMD's A series processors are getting a bit old now and, if I remember correctly, only support up to DDR3 memory, not the latest DDR4 memory. Personally I would go wiith something with an AMD Ryzen processor, preferably the Ryzen 5., for example HP255 the performance should be a lot better. I believe the Ryzen series use less power too so longer battery life. 24. Posted by Jonathan M on 01/10/2020 21:06:11: Posted by Shaun Walsh on 01/10/2020 17:14:09: The Max Thrust Riot gives a CoG of 75-90mm in the instructions, cgCalc gives a figure of 78 to 92mm. With the CoG towards the front it's very docile, with the CoG towards the rear it's still rather docile but will fly inverted with very little down elevator although you won't get a flat spin. On the other hand the Dancing Wings Spacewalker I built shows CoG at 70mm and set at that it was a wild ride on the first flight. cgCalc gives a value of 45 to 55mm which was much better. Case in point: exactly where is the thickest part of the Spacewalker wing? 50mm-ish or 70mm? Unsurprisingly the thickest part of the Spacewalker wing is 50mm approx. from the LE.
