    I've just installed a Spektrum AR410 rx in a vintage job, very compact and light (7 grams!), no aerials and dead easy to set up and bind. mines mounted on the cabin bulkhead so it can "see out", think there around £23.     Paul, leave it on methonal, it's not the valves it's the seats that need to be hardened, methonal burns a lot cooler than petrol at the expense of greater consumption. Just my thoughts ( hope Jon jumps in and backs me up)but I would carry on using the oil ratio recommended, I think a lot of trouble comes when modellers try to extract the absolute maximum out of there fitted engines when a larger engine ran below of its capabilities would give far less trouble and last longer. I only fly vintage jobs now but I do like to use a slightly larger engine than recommended and run them rich and undercompressed ( diesels obviously!) partly due to my mechanical sympathy but mainly because spares are unobtainable...just my thoughts.

    Soft valve seats, it was never designed to run on petrol. You may be lucky and find someone to fit hardened seats but realistically your looking at new heads I'm afraid.

    If your using electric or diesel power then good old fashioned humbrol enamel will be fine..

    I've just installed a 410 into a little vintage job, no problems so far, extremely light weight and compact.

    Oh that's a shame, you have my sympathy, I, along with a few others once had permission to fly from the runway at Brooklands, lovely while it lasted until Tesco, M&S and Mercedes (rather ironic that last one) decided they wanted to carve up the place....

    I use the little waxed paper pots that are used in McDonald's to put your ketchup in, they never seem to mind me taking a few ( probably polite to buy a burger though!).

    Richard, again No! I know it's only £3.50 but it's actually starting to p##s me off, I'm not bothered about any discounts it may get me and I know I'll never be asked to show it but...... As a aside my fishing rod licence turned up in 3 days.

    Hillclimber, not sure where your located but if your anywhere near surrey your more than welcome to come fly my vintage jobs just to show how benign they are. I'm sure yours will be fine, if in doubt chop the throttle and let it sort it's self out....

    Hillclimber sir, give George at 4max a ring ( sorry can't do links) but he will give you good advice, you really don't need a lot of power with vintage types. As to covering, don't use film, totally out of keeping in my mind, my local model shop (addlestone models) has a roll of vintage cream tex in stock, saw it my self only this morning, that would look lovely with maybe some blue trim ( humbrol enamel?).

    Just finished and flown this, offered as a free plan in the mag recently. My model is rudder only and powered by a Irvine mills. 75, If you've read the accompanying article in the mag you will know this was Vic smeed's last design, pleased to report it flys like a dream, covered in polyester silk and dope with tissue trim, finished weight is 14 ounces.

    I got my polyester silk from hobby craft, very light and strong and it's only £2.50 a metre (900mm wide) applied it with a warm iron using de-luxe materials "covergrip" shrunk it with a slightly hotter iron then 3 coats of thinned dope.....

    move the rear motor peg forward, ensure the knot in the rubber is at the front of the model. 100 grams is a awful lot of nose weight, you may have to rebuild the tail feathers.

    It's hardly worth debating to be honest, pay the £9.,take the test and go and enjoy your flying safe in the knowledge your completely legal....

    I agree with Andrew, strip it and start again. I've just covered a model with polyester silk ( from hobby craft) it's as cheap as chips, £2.50 buys you a metre length, 90cm wide. I applied it using covergrip, goes round double curvetures wonderfully, shrinks with a little heat and three coats of thinned dope seals it.
