  1. Cilan, hell's mouth, know it really well I live close to snowdon, roads clear here. Car on road now, thinking of rejoining penrhos club again, mis hell's mouth for the fabulous soaring sites, will visit soon at weekends. Thanks Andy, see you there probably.
  2. Hi leccyflier, Cannot get a copy as no one stocks the mag here in wetland Snowdonia. May I ask is the Fournier free plan in it, and what is the wing span and length please. I have the well used 049 plan but wondered what changes have been made to electrify it please ?
  3. And/or ailerons, even valley got that one wrong....once.
  4. Hi again Greg, Yes, an experienced look over your sonata after your have made it, fitted it out, balanced it fore and aft and side to side with everything in it, AND c of g, slightly nose down, not forgetting correct control response, and finally a maiden test flight trimmed properly, the controls can be handed to you. Electric power so when up to hieght, turn off motor and float/glide about......repeat, repeat, repeat practising figure of eights in both directions and over each shoulder keeping the glider UP WIND, and practise landing approaches at hieght, you will learn quite quickly. 3 dimensional model boat... I am still wondering about your flying site, and, how you are going to launch it ? Yuo should by now have driven the wife nuts saying "prop the dipping wing with the stick" out loud ? This needs to be automatic, a reflex, instinct, needing no thinking time, a natural response, to stop an approaching out of control moment becoming terminal. Gravity always wins. I am sure your friend's son would help, standing by you keeping an eye out for "strangers" and for safe flying/no bad habits.... Did you get a £3 foam kids chuck glider yet, and, research local slope soaring sites ? Machine mart/dickies do a good internally quilted overall that are warm, to keep you warm etc...which is important... Enjoy...
  5. Before you make your sonata, draw outlines of all ribs etc. as accurately as you can. Photocopy them if you have to. I assume the kit comes with a plan. This way, you have access to a "kit" of parts when needed. During your excercise walks, look at slow flying birds and mimick tx stick movements as if you are flying the bird. Sounds daft but is not. You will be on a steep learning curve soon so be prepared, even for the unexpected. Do you know an RC flyer, a good one ? Never be afraid of saying "I don't know, but I will find out". A basic plan of your proposed flying site would be informative...
  6. Hi again Greg... Firemen are well trained. There are no hero's on a football pitch ! Firemen run the risk of being trampled to death by football players as they are running into a burning building... Training, yes you can self teach how to fly a model plane. What people are so paranoid about is the tyros, the unresponsible i can do anything i like consiquence free moronic ones that do exist, causing mayhem and possible death in a park or anywhere else setting, resulting in the hobby being banned, for all of us. Things are so different these days compared to 20, 30 or 40 years ago. At that time you could fly more or less anywhere but the ANO did exist. These days things are so much different, with laws... Exeter, there will be slope soaring sites... If your going it alone, at least take a look out person with you. Research research research... Look at outerzone found plan. Home brew glider has room for electric power... Make your sonata well, trim it well, it will fly well but you need stuff in place like prop the dipping wing etc.. Learn basic principle of flight, you may discover how a carburettor works. Then, one day, when you, the glider, weather and the empty park area are all ready, go fly. Being a glider, landings should be easy, but will need a lot of "runway".. Go see some slope soaring...on the way back, get a £3 kids chuck glider. Look at it, understand how it glided, trim it to produce a long flat glide, learn how to make it do what you want it to do. A cheap initial learning curve. Can old dogs learn new tricks ? Hell yes ! Safe flying is no accident. Enjoy.
  7. When I renewed bmfa membership just before new year, I was told that a caa reminder would be sent via email. My RCC ( not needed due to certificates ) does not expire for a few years but I checked anyway. I took the RCC last year, it was it the one before. I will of course re read all current regs etc., any update being in bmfa mag due shortly....refresh.... Much better safe than sorry.
  8. Hi Greg, I know you would not want a "beginner" in control of a cigarette anywhere near you... Tidal lagoon, high tide, moron with a cigarette, it somehow climbed at least 6 broad steps, crossed a pedestrian walk way and ended up in the road nearly causing cars to collide ! I don't do kits these days... Outerzone, look up Centenial "Found". An easy to make and enlarge free flight rubber powered plane. It was a free plan many years ago in Aeromodeller magazine, so I made one, sheet fuz, 2 channel r + e, DC sabre 1 1/2 cc diesel, no throttle control. After all the usual checks, it took off straight and was easy to fly, no vices and glided well for perfect landing. I made a "stretched" wing for a home brew glider, me heron 1cc diesel powered which is a great flyer. Today I would not use an "unshuttable down " IC engine in an RC plane. Have a look, the found will easily scale up. A great flier. As to your flying site, draw a sketch of the site with rough dimensions, prevailing wind, trees and footpaths etc . to show us possible suitability. Join bmfa if only for the insurance, but remember, just cos you have insurance, does not exclude "inexperience/stupidity/ignorance". Any slope soaring sites near you get to able by car ? Start your flying training by saying out loud " prop the dipping wing with the stick", then say it in your head, and eventually it will be "instinct", so very little time needed for control response. To be fare ( and legal etc. ) Get club tuition....

  10. Might it power a foam hot wire...and have an overload cut out ?
  11. Hi Ed, sounds interesting, no pictures yet...
  12. Pvouge, did you get the instruction sheet with your engine ? I initially ran mine with an idle bar plug on straight castor for ages. Then discovered Enya no 3 plugs. As the engine got older I went up to 5 percent nitro, still runs well even if it is a little worn now.
  13. Well that worked.... Maiden flight of the Lidl powered flying wing free flight pteronodon model on Sunday in Bethesda liesure centre. After a few "wall strikes" I found the sweet spot and launched the model. It climbed away nicely missing the ways, gaining hieght on the "full power" timed period, holding altitude on the slow speed timed period and gliding quite steeply on power off, landing close to my feet. Many flights after this, time after time flying well. Well Pleased 😊 The other guys at the meeting ( hot air balloon flying as well ) asked about this model. I am still waiting for a reply from wowstuff.com about the "3 modes", but l am not holding my breath. The wowstuff.com on site " contact us" method does not work, on my cheapo internet phone at least. I wonder if they have gone bump ? There were several free flight rubber powered planes flying, and a nice pipe cub RC. A largish Fokker triplane RC as well as some other RC planes. The group will have access to a much larger sports hall very soon meaning RC planes will really come into Thier own, particularly if the hall is wider.
  14. Panic over, she managed to find a serviceable filter, but good to know these sheets are available. Thanks guys.
  15. Not for me, but I would probably find a need for some.... Does anyone know of a company that could supply a sheet of fine mesh brass gauze please. Thanks in advance...
  16. May I ask is the recent bmfa AAIB webinar available for viewing yet please ?
  17. And that yellow Veron...i can't quite remember the name, colt maybe. Is there a kk joker there ? Nice.
  18. For those that missed the detectorists the first time round, series 1 is repeated on Tuesdays bbc2 @ 10pm, in Wales anyway. Well worth watching.
  19. Thanks for that... Eventually I visited the manufacturers ( ? ) Website and found some info there. Press, red light comes on, press again, approx 6 second at hi speed then about same slow speed. However press twice quite quickly approx 9 second hi speed then 5 seconds at low speed... Tried pressing 3 times quickly, same timed run. So may be mode 1 is a chuck glider ? Still mulling over head rubber band fixing method. Loop thru head and band, then long tail over the circular bit ? Hoping sunny dry and flat calm tomorrow for a test flight. Football pitch should be long enough for 100 yard straight and level flight ? How long is a football pitch ? Will take ninja helo, some more chuck gliders, rubber powered free flight stick and the 2 Lidl drones, the mini one and last year's larger one. Please God some good weather, pretty please...😇 Getting really p'd off with poor weather.
  20. Hi John, another good report of the Aldi pteranodon free flight flying wing. Not had any chance to try mine yet, windy and raining all day apart from 20 minutes of sunshine today. 3 modes, is one mode as a chuck glider ? Is a standard sized football pitch a big enough area to fly it may I ask ? The pitch is surrounded on 3 sides by 30foot trees...
  21. So glad you are flying hillclimber. Practice practise practise, you will soon be going solo which is when the real learning starts. Good that you have a "target" to reach and surpass, you'll soon get your A ticket. Never had a wot4 but they were popular at Llyn club at the time. My shadow ( still flying well, thanks Ian ) is a bit wot4 ish ....
