2.4GHz radio and cellular phone masts
James M replied to Peter Smith 12's topic in General Radio Discussion
@import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); Posted by Peter Smith 12 on 25/08/2011 08:21:26: But if the signal is big enough it will make the receiver deaf momentarily no matter what frequency its hopping too? Yes, in a fashion. If you have interference with in a frequency band, as with the 35 MHz systems frequency clashes, this is 1st/primary harmonic interference. As you go further away from the frequency you go to 2nd/secondary harmonic interference, then 3rd/tertiary harmonic interference and so on down the orders. Also as you move to the lower orders there will need significantly more power to cause the interference. This is taking me back to my uni days and looking at wave synthesis! Also as 2.4 GHz uses packet data, like the internet, so as more and more packets are lost the signal will eventually collaps! No system is perfect! Edited By James M on 25/08/2011 09:25:05 -
2.4GHz radio and cellular phone masts
James M replied to Peter Smith 12's topic in General Radio Discussion
Hi all At our flying site we have a couple of mobile phone masts and have lost a plane or two when flying near the mast - we think. One possibly was receiver battery failure plane was never recovered, the other was flying close to the mast and we lost control, recovered and all ok when tested. The way to think about it is the signals from the transmitter are 150/500 mW (milliwatts) and a phone mast operates at around 20watts but when you get through the antenna gains and the rest it becomes about 800 watts outputting from the aerial. If you fly close enough to it you your signal will be lost, imagine standing next to a baby screaming for food, whilst trying to hear someone, talking to you in a low whisper from the other side of the room, you can't. Similar sort of thing will be happening to the receiver in the aircraft, there will be some form isolation from foreign radio signals but at some point it will be over loaded and fail! Same principles are used for radio jamming, you don't need to know the exact frequency if you can drown out a lot of the surrounding spectrum - and 1.8 to 2.4 GHz isn't a big jump when the power difference is so big! -
here's and idea can't you make it a Summer Special and have it between July - August and split the year ?? Or is there a historical precedent for this ?? Or - thinking about it - you have a plan special in the summer so you's have two specials at the same time!

Hi David Something wrong here - October issue in August ?? No wonder I'm getting old quickly! James @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);

Hi All was looking at the on line plans on the my hobbystore and came across the MAG1515 CIR Any one built/flown on recently ?? Was looking for a balsa flying wing to make and fly as an alternative to the foamies that I currently have. Does any one have any other suggestions ?? I have looked at the wicked wings on micron rc but after something a bit bigger.

Did also find this on the RCME site! We are a font of knowledge! @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);

Flying on recreation grounds and in other public spaces
James M replied to f3ktony's topic in Flying Sites and Clubs
Hi Have been looking further down the list and there is a fly in to ointment Remote Controlled Operated Model Vehicles 34. No person shall use a remote controlled operated model vehicle without prior written consent of the parish council. That means even if you are OK for weight, power etc you still need there consent before you can proceed - they have that loop hole covered as well! @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); -
They have changed the pid number on my DX8! Came back today - looks the same but service note says that the rf board has been re-programmed. Guess there are some parts that the firmware update can't reach !

Hello Best solution I have found it to use 3M Benderm surgical tape - used to use Sellotape Diamond Tape but no longer in production. A strip top and bottom works a treat on the EPP flying wings I fly. When I have the Rx buried and inaccessible, I usually fit a short extension lead to the battery/bind socket, and leave it poking out. power is fed via any spare socket. This way, I can bind /re-bind to different Tx s Thanks Tim A simple and elegant solution to a problem that has baffled me for the last 3 years.......I guess age has it's benefits...... Was going to point out that they are powered wings, and this wouldn't work, but then remembered that the bind/battery socket is the one before the throttle circuit!! Now all I need is a a brace of short extension leads..........but as the house has been newly decorated and the spares boxes aren't were I left them, I swear that they grow legs and move when I'm not looking......this will mean another trip to the LHS.........such a hardship @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);

Would rather stick with a manufacture that omits there are faults and then corrects them in a professional manner - as spektrum are doing here - than use a company that gets fewer errors but then doesn't help with there resolution. My DX8 is off getting mended and will soon be back! The only bug bear is that I'm now not going to maiden my new brace of flying wings this saturday, I have a DX6i but as the rxs are embedded in the foam i'd rather do it once than keep recovering. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);

How much do you spend on the hobby per year?
James M replied to Tom T's topic in Modelling Money Savers...
Too Much! I'm attempting to master the black art or rotary flight so most of what I'm spending at the moment is on spares and repairs. The thing that annoys the most is the postage and packaging! I have a couple of local(ish) model shops - about a 80 mile round trip - so it is my only real option, also they don't carry the spares i need in stock most of the time! Still it keeps me (in)sane so I figure it is a small price to pay. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); -
Hi All Looking at the ease at which you can do the leads with the correct tool I have bought the bullet and bought a crimping tool also. Went with Colin's recommendation from 4 max. I can tidy up a few models with it! James @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);

Hi All I use pliers to do the job! I just googled the link above, it was the first link I found! Needle nose to start the bend then square ended pliers to give the final crimp. Also have used a crimping tool similar to the one on the link after starting the crimp with needle nose pliers (i usually mislay this crimper at home!) It is a bit easier that just using pliers. But what ever works well - and safely in to days climate - to get the job done! Hi All On the look out for a new sports flyer and have been looking at the new Parkzone Stryker. I have also been tempted to try my hand a the 3D style of flying and have been looking for a large EPP based model to learn on but haven't really seen anything - anyone have any suggestions ?? Vaguely remember there being one in a fairly recent magazine article but my collection is in the loft whilst the decorators are in! And before anyone says anything I know that I am looking at completely different model styles/flying. Hi All Have purchased SimStick the other day and have been testing.... I like it!! I like the fact that you are able to move around a bit more and hold the tx in a more realistic manner. The only annoyance was that I had to assign the channels. Would recommend to anyone.
