Djay
Has any one started, or built the 1/4.5 scale MR Hurricane? I am looking at getting this in the new year and would like to know any ones build opinions or photos. Darryl
Lee Smalley
not built one Djay but the kit has been around for many years and he is a scale master, i don't think you can go far wrong do you ??
Djay
Thanks Lee. this is the big Hurricane, I thought he did a smaller one which has been around for a while? Anyway you are right, but it would be nice to share experiences and see how the builds progress. Darryl
Martin Harris - Moderator
The 1/6 scale one (80") came out in around '76 - I had one but never finished it before I stopped modelling first time round... Hard to believe these days but it was designed to be flown on a .60 2 stroke....
Alan Cantwell
knowing how mick reeves kits are, you would be better of contacting Veasey on here, and asking about the increased size Tony Nighouse?(sorry, never can remember your name Tony)
Djay
Thanks Alan. I have just built 3 Tony Nijhuis models, the smaller Lanc, the Lysander and the Typhoon. They build easily and fly well. Did Veasey scale up the TN Hurricane, or is TN planning on releasing a bigger version? Darryl
Alan Cantwell
Not sure, i think he did, but the construction would have to be altered for the larger size
Danny Fenton
Micks big Hurricane is recent, i am very tempted. But at 109" it is going take a fair bit of space. I spoke to Mick about it and his new 1/4 scale Spitfire, both electric. The thing Ilike the most is you can buy in stages and spread the cost. The bit i dont like too much is the extensive use of Proskin to cover the fus. Greggs is 1/5 and does look a good compromise Cheers Danny
andy watson
Since you buy the proskin seperately (I used some thick stuff for horns, and it was excellent- but I'm not conviced as a skin) why not sheet with balsa in the usual way? Danny Fenton
Hi Andy, that was my thought exactly, the formers and sections would have to be reduced accordingly but it is do-able, as removing is easier than adding I am not against proskin it really is great stuff, but I am not happy about skinning with it. If I could have found a Turnigy 80-100 I may still consider it, but at the moment that motor is not available any more.CheersDanny
David Kennerley
Hi Danny I love the look of Micks hurricane and would love to build one , but I have a DB sport & scale spit to finish first why would you not want to skin with pro film if you used balsa you would probably glass cloth it . wouldn't the pro film be lighter Cheers Dave Ps if anyone know of a build blog I'd love to have a look
Danny Fenton
Hi there is at least one build going on over on rcsb being built by Walter. If you want a link let me know?CheersDanny
Codename-John
Pro skin and Pro film are totally different things David, the Film is as the name, and Pro skin is Epoxy Glass sheet in different thicknesses. It`s difficult to do curved areas of sheeting etc and if you look at it on Mick Reeves site he did a comparison where a normal balsa skinned then epoxy glassed wing was compared to a Pro Skin skinned wing, it worked out a bit cheaper using Pro skin and took less time as you dont have to lay up and sand / fill the glass, but weighed more overall
David Kennerley
thanks for your replies I think I messed up when I typed in pro film I meant pro skin but I can imagine, now you mention it any double curvature would be awkward. But I,m surprised it is heavier I will try and find the hurricane build on rcsb Cheers Dave
