Alan Cantwell
anyone know how you tell the size of a PAW? i have 2 too sell, they are phyisically differant, but as usual, no size on the motor, i dont want to break them down and start measuring pistons and cylinders to work it out, must be an easier way,
Alan Cantwell
HOLD IT, jut looked on the PAW site, got the mounting sizes there, seems they are R/C 19s, but now, how do you tell they are ball raced or plain, again, without breaking them down? motors are r/c, and are fitted with factory silencers
PatMc
Alan, I think the mounting sizes of the 15 (2.49) are identical to the 19. I have a 19 & 3 different 2.49s, they all have the same mounting screw spacings etc but the crankcases are all different. You can use a magnet to detect if there's a ball bearing but you need to be able to compare the strength of pull against another PAW you know has (or hasn't) one or to differentiate between a pb & bb - if that makes sense. PS I think sometimes there's a small 15, 2.49 or 19 on the rear cover. Mine are in a box in the loft so can't check. IanN
Yes, could be .15s or .19s. Pat is right: some PAWs have the capacity engraved in small nos on the rear cover but - annoyingly - not all have this Do any of your clubmates have similar size PAWs? If you put a prop on and turn them over you'll certainly "feel" the diff between a .15 and a .19 - though that won't tell you the bearing type I'll dig mine out this weekend (19 TBR and a 15 plain bearing) and see if the crankcase differences are obviuous enough to be worth photo'ing if that would help. How much are you asking for yours, Alan?
Alan Cantwell
to be honest, not sure if i want to sell them, might have a play first, ta for the help
Martin Harris - Moderator
Grab hold of the crankshaft and pull it in and out. If it moves easily it's plain bearing - if not it's ball raced.
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Don't PAW make single (BR) & twin (TBR) ball bearing motors....? The TBR version will have a larger front housing for the front bearing but other than that I'm not sure....maybe drop a note to Paul at PAW & ask him..... Matt Holmes
I bought a 15 BR jast year it has BR stamped on the mounting flange. i have had plain bering versions in the past with no stamping so would surgest that might be a good indercation of having any bearings. 15 and 19 have the same external dimensions. hope this helps, Matt
Mark Lubbock
I have some old PAWs & the only external difference between the 249s & the .19 I have is that the needle is swept back on the .19. Some of the smaller ones ( 80 & 100) have 80 or 100 stamped on the backplate.
IanN
Not always so. I've had 80s and 100s both with and without stamps Out of interest, when you say your "old" PAW 19 had the needle swept back, how "old" are you referring to?. Was this one of the upright (ie non r/c) venturi engines?
Mark Lubbock
Yes I do mean old, possibly early 1970s with the upright venturis, not R/C.
