Garry Pollard
I have been given 2 hard case lipos by a friend. Can they be used in aircraft, and if not , Why Thanks Garry
WolstonFlyer
They are usually used in RC cars, the case protects them from water and crash impact.Apart from the extra weight I imagine they should work.
Myron Beaumont
The Dreamliner is now grounded thanks in part to the "new age" Lithium Ion batteries that control anti icing systems etc etc.Say no more !!! Fit a few Merlins & lead acid batteries I say. Edited By Myron Beaumont on 11/01/2013 22:21:
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Certainly no reason why not Gary....the car boys give them quite a hammering so they are usually quite high C ratings.I'm guessing they are 2S packs though....can you use them as 2S or might you connect 2 packs in series as a 4S pack? Garry Pollard
Thanks for that Steve. That is the general idea, make up a 4S pack. Thanks Garry
Reno Racer
Garry, i;d just heck the C ratings of the packs first before you ask too much of them in an aircraft set up. Of course, its depends on the power setup you want to use them fo and how many Amps you demand, many car lipos are only 15C.
Garry Pollard
Thanks for the replies, I will try them out and report back . Garry
John Cole
Maybe a good idea to check they really are LiPo not old-type Li-ion. What shape are they? If they are old-style cylindrical Li Ion cells then they may have very low C rating.
Garry Pollard
Hi John, They are deff lipo s not cylindrical, nut normal lipo shape, and are rated 20 C. Garry
Simon Chaddock
I suspect the only issue is weight. Hard case LiPos are about 25% heavier. 2s 5000mAh 20C soft case 207g 2s 5000mAh 20C hard case 276g
Simon B
The extra weight could be useful when doing an IC conversion. Saves on lead!
