jeff2wings
Not quite sure how this happened as I had promised myself after the aggro with the HobbyKing Zlin 50 ,not to buy any more ARTF's ,but when this popped up on fleece bay I found myself hitting the buy it NOW button ! Well it's a biplane and a Pitt's ! I'm sooo weak lol ! very little to do the late Jim LeRoy doing the thing he did and loved best ,have a look on Y-Tube ,amazing flying. john melia 1
how is it I always miss these bargains on flea bay , the ones I do see are usually collection ony and 100's of miles away lol
jeff2wings
As a rule they only go cheep when I don't bid on them ! Made a start on the "build " today ,not that much to do as all control surfaces are fitted ,so just add stickers and make holes in the covering for the struts & other fittings. err ,opps ! jeff2wings
So before I finish up covering lower wing I need to decide on the servo setup i.e.. four standard servos (s3003) or two digital S3050's as I will need to add local reinforcement to the ailerons for the inter-aileron connection rods
jeff2wings
So while everyone is thinking about what servo setup I should use , I add the tail surfaces and some stickers ! I also evicted the odd sized pilot better ??
Bob Cotsford
Both my Skybolt (58", 10 lb, 1.20 FS) and Christen Eagle (66", 13lb, 1.80 FS) use high torque servos in the lower wings with pushrods to the upper ailerons. The Skybolt is not a slow model and a pair of 3152s cope fine. The Eagle has HS645MGs but has only had one flight to date so isn't really a valid example other than CMPro setting it up for two servos. Neither of these are candidates for 3D though, being set up for smooth, fast pattern style flying.
jeff2wings
Thanks Bob think I will go with 3050's on the lower wing ,two decades ago I used 148's on my 1/4 scale Phil Ramsey S2A Pitts with no problems . this was a mate's ,mine was in marlbro colours built at the same time ST 2000's up front
jeff2wings
Well just about done but for the engine, that could be fun as the engine bay is a bit on the 'short' side ! oh well, out with the hacksaw again ! any one got a cowl for a CML/ASM Pitts they would like to sell ????? Stephen Grigg
Nice jeff what engine do you plan for it.
jeff2wings
Wellll........... ASP 120 2s ASP 120 4s ST 2500 Moki 135 Laser 150 Enya 120 4s hummmmmm.....................
jeff2wings
I've gone for the Moki as it should give me the performance I'm looking for with this plane , it would have been nice with a 4 stroke but I think 180 would have been needed will use a BCM silencer from Just Engines I did consider making one from scratch but the cost of materials was as much as the ready made item ! I may add a baffle to it .
john stones 1 - Moderator
what w/span and weight Jeff like colour scheme, stands out in any sky
jeff2wings
W/span is 55" and should be around 4.8-5 kg yes, outstanding !!
john stones 1 - Moderator
Moki 180 perfect, just like a real one will sound right as well, keep away from noise meter though
karl grey
If your going for the bcm pitts from just engines ask them to fit their pepperpot to each outlet to bring your noise down. I've been struggling to get my moki 135 through our 84db noise limit but a club mate has the pepperpot modification from JE fitted on his 135 and passed so i think i'll be sending mine off for the same treatment. Think the cost was about £25plus postage but worth checking.
jeff2wings
Thank's for the gen Karl , can you recommend me a prop/size as well ?
karl grey
16x8 goes well
jeff2wings
Well after a bit of digging in my archive ,found a test report on the moki and the 16x8 is the smallest prop for this engine , an 18x6 or 18x8 being a good size with rpm’s in the 7,500-8,000 range .Just Engines were out of stock of BCM pitts mufflers ,but after having a chat with them they made one for me with a single outlet and extra baffling , and arrived at my door in less than two weeks from sending my original order ,fantastic service ! karl grey
Did you opt for the pepper pot fitted on the outlet or just internal baffling Jeff? Just engines do give a good service
jeff2wings
Just Engines have never let me down with there service ! So, almost ready to fly ? not if it ends up on my work bench just the cowl to mod next
john stones 1 - Moderator
engines perfect fit Jeff, don't forget hole for needle though think your right with 18 inch prop, your making me drool
jeff2wings
Most likely fit a remote needle to get my fingers well away from that prop ! The cowl is a thin molding so I'm adding some extra G/F to stiffen it up at the back so the mounting screws don't fret the holes out and add a lip to the lower edge so as to assist the air extraction
