kenking-King Design
I need some M.E. steel screws, specifically ⅛" x 40, in a couple of different lengths. Chuck Plains
Just as a by the way, and presuming that you mean a 40 turns per inch 1/8" diameter screw, that seems to be a 5-40 UNC thread. I just found some on ebay
kc
I think you will find ME threads are different to UNC even if the dia and TPI are the sameME threads are cut to a Whitworth 55 degrees while UNC (& UNF & Metric)are 60 degrees. So not compatible.Tracy Tools sell taps & dies in ME sizes if that is any help to you. They also sell every other thread you can think of. Lee Damms
You're right kc 1/8 x 40 is indeed a BSW/Model engineering thread both are 55 degrees. Beware on ebay some people sell UNC as BSW and as stated they are not the same. Regards Lee
Chuck Plains
Right, so although two screws and or nuts have a 1/8" diameter, and you could bully one into the other, they could feel tight when they are actually not secured at all due to merely having a single point contact all the way round the thread where they engage. Point taken.
kc
They may well jam together which is even worse! The recommended tapping drill size for ME 1/8 is 2.4mm and for the 5 /40 UNC its 2.6mm which tells you something.
David Holland 2
Hi Ken A bit late coming in on this butI have been a model engineer for quite a few years and have never seen ME fasteners available commercially. Just been on the EKP Supplies website and they don't list any ME screws, bolts or nuts. Most of us older model engineers who can't get the hang of this new fangled metric malarky use BA screws, bolts and nuts ( screws have the thread all the way to the head and bolt have a length of plain shank between head and thread) for assemblies and ME threads for steam fittings etc. ME taps and dies are readily available in either 32 or 40 tpi. Give Tracy Tools a try as kc suggests. David Holland
