Tony Bennett
Thought i would start drawing up some plans for a profile Boulton Paul Defiant. 34" wingspan for 3s lecky power. no u/c.
Chris Jones 7
Oooh I like that! I've always had a soft spot for the Defiant.
Andrew767
Tony ......That's super......Did you draw this from a 3 view?....How did you transfer it? Andrew
Tony Bennett
i scaled it up from a printed off 3 view. not going to be very scale, but will look like a defiant from a distance.
reg shaw
Ooooh watching with interest, love the Defiant. ....one day I'll have me one too!!!! Ian.

reg shaw
Mmmm, interesting..... if you need any info when you're doing the big Defiant than I have stacks of works drawings and stuff, 1/4 scale? 120" span? If so I also have the cowl sorted!! Ian.
Tony Bennett
oooooooooooooh yes please sir, any help will be greatly appreciated sir. wasn't thinking of 1/4 scale, more like 5th and 7th. but 1/4 sounds interesting.
Colin Leighfield
You've got competition from Chris Golds, he's doing a big one as well for QEFI. Mind you, you can't have too many Defiants!
Tony Bennett
best forget it then.
Colin Leighfield
Don't do that! He showed a picture of it in last month's (or the previous month's ) edition, I didn't know if you'd seen it.
A.A. Barry
Tony, I just received a plan and short kit from Laser Design Services, great wood and plan, good value. 74" exact scale, there is not a lot of info around, RMC&E do a line drawing pack, which by the sound of it you have. There is a Book/file from Amason but at $A294.00, but too much for me Cheers, keep at it. Barry Edited By A.A. Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Very interesting choice of subject Tony - sadly you don't see many Defiants around. Looking forward to seeing this take shape. BEB
Dylan Reynolds LaserCraft Services
This should be a fun one to do, already CADed a fuz for the bigger version, still in its early stages of development, but 1/4 would be nice, especially sat next to the 1/4 scale shack on the runway
Colin Leighfield
There are choices too, Mk1 or 2, day or night fighter and target tug. I alway though a Defiant with a Griffon. instead of a Merlin and a couple of Hispanos in the wing could have been interesting. It would have been like a WW2 Bristol fighter then and that formula worked well in WW1.

Richie Carey Maddog Designs UK
Now that a good choice of aeroplane to model sir, I will be following this one with keen interest. Richie
Tony Bennett
right gents. i took a tracing of the drawing out to the shed and found a sheet of 3mm balsa and some offcuts of 3mm lite ply. Now it is not a scale model but just a fun fly version that resembles the defiant and is quick and easy to build. hence the flat sides, top and bottom. 3s electric with a 300watt motor, no u/c and just elevator and ailerons. Tony Bennett
the next job was to take some scrap bits of 6mm balsa and cut out the fin and rudder. then you need to glue 4 bits of 6mm together and carve into the shape of the canopy. do the same with the gun turret and make up the tail fairing. glue it all on and run a small amount of filler along the joints. we have a Boulton Paul Defiant look alike now. Wings are the next job.
Tony Bennett
oh fudge. the 3 view i was working from was out of scale. the wing span was wrong on it. so now it will be not as big as i had hoped. down to 26" wingspan and running on a 2s lipo. dang it. Richie Carey Maddog Designs UK
Are you by any chance hoping to get in the Guinness record book for the fastest designed built and flown model sir. Judging by the rate of knots you are going it will probably be finished by tomorrow afternoon How about on of these next? Its on my to do list but that list is so long I recon I’ll be in my eighties before I get around to it hahaha
Tony Bennett
hmmmm. next on the list then sir for a cartoon scale model. sorry about the flap gents, i still had my scale head on where everything has to be the right size. i forgot this was a cartoon scale model. right i have sorted my wing problem, decided to split the difference between the scale and un scale wing and settled on a 30" wingspan. any way i have drawn up and cut out the tailplane and rudders.
