David Ashby - Moderator
Yes I heard that quite clearly near Tonbridge, the radiator rattled twice with the two booms.
Reno Racer
Typical! RAF Typhoons, but pictures of a tornado GR4 and USAF F22. Oh well, at least they got the base name right, they were QRA Typhoons from Coningsby. I suppose anyone outside aviation circles will not know any different

Shaunie
I bet there's a couple of RAF pilots with big smiles on their faces right now! Correct me if I'm wrong but supersonic over main land UK is not normally permitted in peacetime. Shaunie. BTW David didn't realise you were so close, where do you fly? John Privett
Posted by Shaunie on 29/10/2014 20:44:28: Correct me if I'm wrong but supersonic over main land UK is not normally permitted in peacetime. You're right. That point was specifically made in the BBC report; An RAF spokesman said: "Typhoon aircraft were launched this afternoon from RAF Coningsby to intercept a civilian aircraft south of London which was causing concern to air traffic control authorities. "The aircraft was safely escorted to London Stansted. "To fulfil their quick reaction role the Typhoons were cleared to travel at supersonic speed, any noise disturbance as a result of this is regretted." The RAF confirmed the aircraft was a Russian-made Antonov An-26. It apologised if crews had "startled people" but added that jets only went supersonic over land when absolutely necessary.
