Tomtom39
Looking pretty good Chas. Pretty impatient to get my teeth into it when I get back.
Chas Morgan
The change of sequence has worked really well and had no problems at all on the second wing. I will have a list of items that may help other builders, but please note they will just be things that I found easier to do and they are not by any means a criticism of the kit and I do not recommend anyone else to follow my comments as opposed to the kit instructions, they are just my personal opinion which could be completely wrong. Martian
it's looking good another build to follow
Chas Morgan
I nearly messed up getting the glue in for the top sheeting, but okay and I had to grab extra pins from my wife!!!! Notice I have put back the sub frame now and of course using the wing end template. Don't forget to mark out the retract area as it seems to miss this on the instructions, I just drilled a hole at the wheel centre point and also centre in retract mechanism area. I must buy more pins and white glue tomorrow. The Wren44 turbine is now ordered!!!!
Trevor Rushton
Make those replacement pins a priority Charles!- you are treading on dangerous ground! Looking impressive- I thought this was a Christmas present - at the rate you are building you will need to buy another model for Christmas and make this one an autumn build. Chas Morgan
Plenty of pins now!
Tony Bennett
looking good. i love a good looking naked balsa build.
Trevor Rushton
I trust that the Chief of the Domestic Staff has seen her pin stocks replenished.? (Don't give them back with glue residue on them, it tends to be emotive - I once obtained a similar effect by using the iron to shrink solarfilm) Do the wings come off for transport? I like the laser cut jigs.
Chas Morgan
No she has just lost a few and glad to see I have my own now!! Wings are permanent, tail and booms come off for transport. Yes jigs are very good.
Chas Morgan
This thin extension tubing for cyno dispencing is brilliant just in case anyone has not used it I have used it on this model from the start and will never be without it again. No more putting the top on just leave as is and it does nut gum up!
Chas Morgan
I have now started on the Booms and Tail as I have ordered a steerable nose leg and just want to see how it fits before completing the sheeting on the fuselage. Trevor Rushton
Those tail booms look fun; do you have to plank them or are they covered in sheet?
Chas Morgan
Sheeting as you will see tomorrow. It is amazing what a little damping can do. The sheet balsa that the frame is on is already glued to the frame along the bottom stringer.
Chas Morgan
Trial fit of tail waiting for servo leads before getting all sheeting done, they should be here tomorrow. The sheeting of the booms went much more easily than I thought, wetting the balsa did the trick. I used a combination of Cyno and white glue which made things much easier. Trevor Rushton
Beginning to look the business now Charles. Are the ailerons cut out later or are they strip type along the TE?. Its a pity that you will have to wait so long for the Wren; What size EDF would it take - 90mm? Are there electric options on the plan or would you have to design a conversion? T
Chas Morgan
Thanks. Strip type add on with the flaps same for elevator. Electric version is sort of on the plan. And slope sourer! Is this going to be your next model.I still have a huge amount of work to complete! Great fun building it. Very good kit.
Chas Morgan
Checking for wing/tail alignment, all looks good. Just trying to sort the retracts before sheeting all the fuselage, bit of a headache, but I think I am getting there.
Chas Morgan
Retracts have just gone in and will need a little final adjusting they are a little large for the model, but will be okay when completed. Nice to see the Vampire on a wheel or two, now I am back on planking and completing sheeting.
Chas Morgan
Planking complete except the cockpit and sanding of course. Glad to get this out of the way, but good fun!!
Chas Morgan
The weight is looking good, I weighed the item as above plus the booms, tail, all the control surfaces,a receiver battery, all the servos, and retracts and main wheels are in the above. The weight was 2Kg exactly. The Turbine incl. ancillaries is 0.800Kg. I don't know how much weight the glassing and paint will add, but the hole aircraft completed should certainly be under 7Kg and I would think could well be in the region of 4 to 5Kg which would be brilliant as the Turbine dishes out about 4.5Kg. on full chat. Trevor Rushton
That looks good Charles; I am pleased its working out well and that the weight looks good. Those wheels did look quite big, but not so when you have them retracted Are you using epoxy or PU on the glass? Take your time on it - it will be worth it when you have done - just dont forget the sanding sealer first!
Chas Morgan
Trying pu for the first time! I can hardly forget the sanding sealer as I went into Sussex Models to get some and they had run out of the end medium size and only had a huge size, I don't know why I did not order a sensible size,oh well there we are!!! Trevor Rushton
Don't worry Charles; you will be able to use it on the Olympia. Mixing a bit of talcum powder in the PU helps thicken it up and fill the weave of the glass, but lots of thin coats and light rubbing down between produces good results. Chas Morgan
Cockpit planking going on and rear former and stringers now reduced to ply exit ring for turbine tail pipe. Notice the large tin of sanding sealer in the background!!
