trebor
I'm thinking about building from scratch a clipped wing cub round about 80". Can anyone recommend one ? I've seen a few Sig versions but the one I fancied was just too big. As I'm no balsa expert maybe a kit would be best with parts identified. Ideally this would be a keeper so a nice flyer essential. Terry Walters
I've got the Sig 1/4 scale to build trebor. The 1/5 is laser cut but the 1/4 is not. Not a great deal of difference in price but they are both considered to be good kits and reasonably scale. john stones 1 - Moderator
The Sig 1/5 scale can be built as a clippie or J3, good models John
Frank Skilbeck
I've got a 1/6th scale SIG CW Cub that I built around 30 years ago, just going through a refurb after it hadn't flown for 20 years or so, but it was an absolute delight to fly, looking forward to getting it back in the air. A larger one would be ace.
trebor
I've got the Hanger 9 80" version but fancy one a bit more sporty. This one I've got was a crash damaged one and its gained a bit of weight after the repairs. Are there any other versions this side of the pond ? trebor
I must admit when I went on Sig website I only saw the 1/6 scale c w cub, didn't realise they had a 1/4 scale and its got 86" span. Could be a contender.
john stones 1 - Moderator
World models also, ARTF though, I had the 1/6 and the 1/5 loads of fun, the 1/6 with a 52 four stroke is nice...I love Cubs John
Stephen Jones
Or why not but one already built like this one . Flown at our club by Stig aka Austin . Steve
trebor
Well after a long time due to seeing the price of a new kit I spotted this older kit at a good price, the cat likes it anyway. I am looking forward to building it next year but for now it slid into the loft away from the eyes of TOH ( the other half ). I can collect bits for it on the QT. Had a glassfibre cowl thrown in as well.
john stones 1 - Moderator
Off the BMFA classifieds Robert ? You'll enjoy that i've the same one
trebor
Yes, it wasn't too far from me. I think the price must have gone up since the last time I looked so it had to be done. What engine have you got in yours ?
john stones 1 - Moderator
I bought it for my 120 fs, now putting NGH 25 petrol in, fits nicely and is too much power really but helps with c.g, nice big prop n cheap to run, still not finished it yet, got stalled with the glazing and paint job, i replaced the front screen acetate with some thinner stuff as i couldn't fit the original stuff too thick. Nice kit though the wood was spot on in mine.
trebor
The only glazing I've done was on the H9 cub and the windows had a frame and folded flanges on the front screen which made it easy. Not sure what you would do with the screen on a flat cut piece. How do you stop air getting under the front edge ?
john stones 1 - Moderator
I put a 1/16 frame inside the side glazing panels so they where easy fitted with canopy glue, the front bits trickier hence me getting stalled, i'll probably glue/iron a strip of covering to seal the front but you'll most likely get better advice of here. jrman
+1 for SIG 1/4 scale clipped Cub. Mine has an OS 120 pumped FS with a XOAR 18x6 prop, a perfect match. Covered in Solartex and painted. No additional weight needed to get c of g correct. Edited By jrman on 04/11/2016 13:27:
trebor
Looks nice Did you use all the supplied hardware and what wheels are those ?
john stones 1 - Moderator
Yep that's a beauty, wish mine was that good, good news on c.g as well
jrman
Yes I used all the supplied hardware which was fine unlike most kits! I have no hang ups about using imperial / US threads and don't substitute them if the quality is good. The wheels are Dubro 1/4 scale Cub wheels from Pegasus Models IIRC. The engine is side mounted as you can see with a matching dummy rather than using the kits plastic ones. Flies mostly at about half throttle with FT only needed for loops, stall turns etc. Takes off at about 3/4 throttle and lands at about 10mph airspeed (from telemetry read out). Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.
..
Nice Bob , Saito 115 would be ideal in there 😉
trebor
I know yours is in a different plane but what sort of flight time do you get ?

Plenty once they are run in mate , the one I have in the Hellcat isn't greedy on fuel and that hammers around at 3/4 throttle most of the time. jrman
Not sure what size the tank is in mine ( it's the one recommended on the plan) but I have got 45 mins on two occasions. Is that long enough?
trebor
45 mins I need a cuppa every 20 mins so that's plenty.
..
You will have to get a straw Bob. I think the blue & white really sets it off. Looking forward to seeing it but knowing deep down the Bob will be taking his time lol 😂.
