Den Moran
Hi!, Anyone got any good suggestions for making a dummy rotary engine/cylinders for a scratchbuilt Stearman PT-17, please? Thanks, Den

Mowerman
Sorry to be pedantic but I thought the PT17 had a radial engine. Don't Williams do a suitable dummy engine. Also there have been articles in the magazines By Tim Hooper and peter Miller on making dummy cylinders.

Peter Miller
Posted by Jim Carss on 29/11/2016 15:38:00: Try here **LINK** WOW. I didn't know that they were available again. I have been keeping 4 of them safe for years. IT would have saved so many hours of work on my scale Rotec 2800 engine for my Locamp! Richard Harris
Den, I wrote an article in RCM&E back in March on how I make multiple cylinder dummy engines, it may be of some help? I would think you could get a back copy through this site. Though not scale they could easily be adapted to be more accurate, I have so far used the same idea to recreate 9,7,5 cylinder radials and 2 & 4 cylinder flat twins. Easy to make and cheap. Well worth a look. Rich
Den Moran
Wow! They look nice, Rich! I'll get on that - think my mate has a back copy! Den
Richard B (DB Sport and Scale Ltd)
Just for info and I won't add a link to our page (Finishing/Williams Brothers) but I do get shipments from Williams Brothers. We have wheels, guns, engines/cylinders and now, some pilots. If something isn't in stock then I'll add it to my next order although it can be a bit of a wait whilst they make all the parts. The price had to go up on my last batch due to having to pay in dollars and I couldn't keep the old price when you add shipping and import taxes. They are still alot cheaper than they used to be. Alternatively, as suggested make your own as you can't (usually) beat that price.
Peter Miller
I did an article in RCModel World. Came out late last year or early this year. It was for my Locamp The cylinders are made from masses of discs of 1/32" ply. IT also tells you how to make rocker covers with embossed names. the engine article was in the January 2016 issue and includes crankcase detail etc Edited By Peter Miller on 30/11/2016 12:25:
Richard Harris
If you are unable to get a copy either way Den I still have all the drawings on my computer so its no bother to send you a copy but I would have to ask David first. The beauty with the idea is that you can size the cylinders to suit your application without to much bother, its basically depron discs varying in size. No reason why other materials couldn't be used as well, infact, Dylan at laser craft has cut me a few kits out of balsa which go together well so may well be worth PM'ing him. The only issue here is that the grain from wood can be seen which may not be to everyones liking. Depron cylinders look like machined items once painted and are far easier to cut with the bonus of being light. I can build a 9 cylinder in a few nights for less than £10 being very satisfying to make. Rich

ceejay
I used my small lathe to shape mine for a Le'rhone all done with a small parting blade and files and glass paper in grey foam, mounted on a bit of dowel in chuck, if I,m right you can look at my album on it and see all the pics
