flight1
Posted by Tom Sharp 2 on 02/01/2017 21:54:25: Pity about the lack of the infamous sound I shore it could be rectified with a pulse jet engine if the whole area could put up with the noise, but with modern mini gas turbines and noise complaints even the Nazis would had adapted(maybe). it would make a impressive PSS too
Alex Ferguson 2
Posted by Tom Sharp 2 on 02/01/2017 21:54:25: Very nice. Pity about the lack of the infamous sound Yes, a bit of a problem when running with electric motors. Note at about 1:22 - 1:25 and see the open front to the motor
KiwiKid
The model was built for the airshow circuit and electric was decided upon as the safest and most reliable form of propulsion. There was also a problem with weight as the model was approaching the level in NZ where it would have been classed as a light aircraft which would have incurred a mass of complications for airshow performances. Propulsion is provided by 5 EDF's and it has a flight duration of about 3 and half minutes. This from a bank of ten LiPo batteries pulling 600 amps at the motors at 50 Volts. 30 Kilowatts at the motors. The power is conveyed to the motors by way of 2 inch square aluminium bar, chosen as compromise between weight and voltage loss. The batteries are probably only good for 20 cycles at this level of abuse as most of the flight is at WOT. Hope they got a discount at HK. Scott Edwards 2
This is the poor man's alternative Probably cost less than a single one of those Lipos lolhttps://youtu.be/iPxsG9aNiME
Simon Chaddock
Nothing like a big but my EDF Republic JB2 "Loon" (exact V1 copy) flies well enough and is even mildly aerobatic.
Colin Leighfield
What a great thread. The V1 video and the air-show photos are brilliant. The Spitfire XIV in SEAC colours looks so charismatic. Simon's V1/Loon video is great as well. Interesting to see ailerons on the V1, of course the original was rudder/elevator only, with gyro stabilisation. It makes you wonder how Hanna Reitsch got on with the manned version! It must have been interesting, to say the least.
Adrian Smith 1
Great photos there KK. Reminded me above all else what what a lovely country you have there in NZ. I wish I could go back!
