cymaz
Posted by Rich too on 02/10/2019 19:01:51: Yes, definitely take your time, it is not a job to rush! You’re right. Though I’ve been dithering since May.....shame on me
Rich too
Mmmm, another option is to replicate them. Shouldn't be too difficult to build another set?
cymaz
Grabbed the bull by the horns. Although I have no idea how to go about it....some I’m poking around in the dark about. Ive decided to make a simple jig to replicate the fin placement each time whilst fitting and glueing the 2 halves. I’m using a sheet of glass to keep everything flat with an old glass table mat...permission from Mrs Cymaz The broken surfaces sanded flat Playing about with carbon rod Drawing up the jig lines on the glass The gap where it glues into the rear of the fuselage has a 20mm fillet. It will be shaped and hopefully hollowed out a bit to reduce the tail weight.
Adrian Smith 1
Nice bit of progress there, Cymaz.
cymaz
Thanks...steady as she goes. I thought about the glass as it is the flattest surface I have. When I glue up I will use my small inclinometer resting on top of the elevator halves. Thus trying to avoid any twist.
Rich too
are you using cf rods to tie them together?
cymaz
Yep, one top and bottom, right through. Got some carbon strip as well should it seem prudent
cymaz
Found some larger diameter tube, much easier to work with. Hollowed out the spacing block and added two ply bearers between the ribs to support the tubes. The next job is to get the face sanded straight and level then glue in the tubes....easier said than done !
cymaz
This morning glued the stabilisers together using the jig. I did one half at a time and only one rod at a time. This gave me thinking time and I was able to make adjustments as I went. I left it for an hour so as to the glue really cure. It was then time to remove all the old sheeting from the tail slot and I removed both elevators. A simple job of patiently cutting and sanding. I trailed fitted a few times and worked away with a sanding block. Took a deep breath, coated the bare balsa with epoxy and pushed it home. Much to my surprise and delight it’s level and square to the wing and bang on. Photos to prove it ! OK, OK ...0.1 degrees of up on the tail. I will live with that. cymaz
Last job is to cut some new elevator slots and install the push rods. Phew
cymaz
Flew the infinity today. No aileron or rudder retrim needed. Only 8-9 clicks of up trim. This was dialled out by 3 turns of the clevises each side on the elevator push rods. Quietly delighted
Bruce Collinson
Well done! Mine is back from the menders looking good but I’m still wrestling with the chicken hopper tank setup. You were lucky to be able to fly, it was blowing a strong northerly here with sharp showers and our strip is very boggy, not helped by some indications of a change in the diet of the resident sheep!
