MattyB
Drones flown and seized from campsite within British GP exclusion zone. Our friendly air minister must be rubbing her hands together with glee... Edited By MattyB on 14/07/2019 23:04:
Nigel R
Alternatively, existing laws perfectly adequate to stop miscreants.
Mike T
"Northamptonshire Police officers and drone specialists from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service detected the devices earlier today, Saturday, July 13, using drone detection and pilot detection software... Policing commander for the event, Superintendent Dennis Murray, said: “The specialist software has so far proved extremely effective. We have been able to detect the drones and locate the pilots..." Excellent news. The technology now appears to exist for stopping illegal drone flights, so the rationale for requiring registration or testing has just disappeared. I hope this is brought to the Select Committee's attention!

Peter Miller
And you can bet your boots that those two would never have been registered anyway so the registration would have been pointless. Also, even if they had been registered the police would still have had to spot them and find them so registration woul have made no difference

Indeed. People flew in restricted airspace, were detected and dealt with. Why do the police need extra powers? Steve We all know that, but that won't be how it is spun by the likes of Baroness Vere and the Daily Fail; they will use it as more "evidence" that greater regulation is required. After all, we already know from her evidence at the committee hearing last week that the DfT are seeking to go beyond the proposed EASA requirements on electronic conspicuity (either that or she is chronically misinformed of what those proposals require - you decide...!). Gordon Whitehead 1
Whilst the 2.5 mile exclusion zone is probably a permanent feature for the heliport, it's not clear whether the cops and firemen and their detection apparatus will always be there too. So this was some sort of success at an event venue, but not necessarily repeatable on a day-to-day basis when there's no racing happening. Eg, a couple of weeks ago my wife and I were enjoying an ice-cream sitting on the quay near the base of the 199 abbey steps at Whitby, when a a small drone flew from some point further along our side of the harbour and then proceeded to buzz back and forth along the quay maybe 25ft up. It would then buzz back to its starting point, seemingly land in the middle of some rocks, and then return a few minutes later. It paid our side of the outer harbour three visits before we left. I don't know if any official action ensued, but it was a noisy little thing that couldn't be missed by anyone nearby. I just wish that I'd had the wit to try videoing it on my mobile. I realise that this report adds nothing to the foregoing, but such occurrences must be fairly regular across the country, and I must add that I found it very annoying. She didn't seem to be totally in command of the subject. She passed on a few things that I would have expected her to have been briefed on and said a few other things that I don't think were quite right. Steve In the words of the inimitable Robin Day........"a here today and gone tomorrow poltician".
