Martin Harris - Moderator
I’d be interested in why the neon goes dark 2 or 3 times while the engine is running fairly strongly in the first 10 seconds or so.
Rich Griff
Thanks for the reply ploughman. This machine probably uses what is known as "energy transfer" system which has been used successfully on strimmers and alike and even on m/cycles. If it's that system, how is the ign kill achieved. A wire from the HT coil to earth via ign switch, a wire earthed via ign switch to enable, two wires connected together via ign switch to enable or some other way. I doubt it's a CDI system but I do not know that engine. A "bad connection" involved with the ignition switch could cause intermitant HT loss. I watched vidio on phone by bus stop with good WiFi and audio. Loss of HT tester flash seemed to slow engine slightly. On flash return it sounded like the governer "throttling up" slightly, which makes sense. So loss of flash means loss of HT, but why..... Establish how ign switch "switches".....switches what to what. Then iliminate or incorporate the ign switch..... CDI ignition system on some m/cycles have a handlebar kill switch living in all weathers that earth a CDI wire to kill ignition system. They sometimes "leak" electrically resulting in a merry-go-round of mulberry wine drinking and hair loss. If this machine were mine, it is where I would start after establishing intermitant HT loss. Vacuum fuel tap is a possibility... One fuel pipe from tank. One fuel pipe to carb. Any other pipes involved with the fuel tap ? Three position fuel tap ? Vacuum fuel tap, fuel off, fuel on ( when engine running ) and Prime position where fuel is on all the time. A third pipe involved with fuel tap, even a blanked off fuel tap stub ? It may be a smaller diameter pipe.
Rich Griff
Further to above, have you visited the Ransomes site ? OPC, operators presence control, akin to train drivers dead man system, suggests an ign kill may be involved ? I bet this machines engine vibrates at bit particularly if it's loose, with things vibrating in harmony/sympathy. Contact Ransomes requesting parts exploded views etc.. Burls
Hi all, just jumping on the end of this thread, be interested to know how you went. I have a similar Mastiff but not cdi. I am currently looking for a diagram to show the 4 wires from the magneto. Colors are Yellow, Yellow/Black, Black and last one is Brown thanks in advance Burls
Ace
We eventually gave up on ours when a local mower specialist was looking for a gearbox to keep one of the golf clubs machines going. A swop/deal was done for a ride on with just 35 hrs use. What manuals we had are a page or so back but don't know if they contain the information! Good luck 🤞
Rich Griff
Hi burls, Visit manufacturers web site for parts exploded views so you know if an ignition isolator/dead man ignition kill switch is fitted. I have seen some wiring diagrams on the ransomed site... Flywheel magneto ? Electric start ? Reg/rec ? Start a new thread for your particular machine...
