Matt Carlton
Just a brief bit about a model I am building to my own design. Nothing fancy. 48" span roughly, Not sure of motor yet but probably a Tornado Thumper 3548/900.
Don Fry
Two things. 1. Your motor, is that the same as the Hobby King offerings of yore. Solid reliable, I think they had plain bushes. 2. Nice looking model. What’s it made of.
Matt Carlton
Hi Don, Yes, I think so, I think they have been marketed under various names. I like them, seem very 'sewing machine' like. Its balsa with bits of ply and will have spruce spars. Possibly vac formed spats but more likely balsa ones.
leccyflyer
Nice - maybe you could sell the design to Seagull Models ?

Although oddly, I did a design years ago which I posted on another forum and an identical model (Eflite Commander) a while later.
Matt Carlton
A little more progress. Fixed tail surfaces are 3/16" x 1/4" framework with 1/32" sheet either side and 1/4" sheet tips for ding resistance (butt jointed with CA to break away easily in an arrival) 1/4" sheet elevator and rudder but that will be tapered. AUW at this point is 10.5oz. Estimated AUW: 55oz (3.5lb) Estimated Wing Loading : 20oz Estimated power: 450W
Matt Carlton
A bit more progress. Cowling as per the Peter Miller method! Top hatch covers Lipo/ESC/Motor access. Half built wing will be fully sheeted and have a nice elliptical trailing edge. Weight so far with half complete wing is 15.5oz.
Matt Carlton
Just a small mockup giving an idea of the finished article.
Matt Carlton
Test fit canopy, made from two flat sheets curved to fit. Roughly sanded to shape (different coloured areas are bits of filler and seams rather than actual lumps and bumps) just need to finish it off then save the pennies for motor, battery and esc. Weight now 19oz, 50" span.
Matt Carlton
Not much to say really, just fiddling now until the covering arrives. Made a natty little 1/32" balsa tube to hold the Hitec Boda antenna:
Matt Carlton
Also a sort of vent under the fus for airflow over the ESC:
Matt Carlton
Then I got a bit bored. 2
GrumpyGnome
Looks good. If it flies as well, could be a plan in the mag ?
GrumpyGnome
The big one, nit the indoor chuckie!
Matt Carlton
I'm not sure about a plan, I'd have to redraw it as there are some areas I'm not happy with and where I deviated from what I had drawn, but thanks for the compliment!
Matt Carlton
Getting there. Bit by bit. 23oz without motor, esc and lipo. Expecting 3lbs AUW now. Loading 17.5oz/sq.ft Power = 450W, but will probably prop that back a bit.
