Paul De Tourtoulon
Thanks to David who gave me a couple of canopy latches, so that's sorted. -100 grams, I took out the futaba S3001 flap servos and blanked off the holes,,, And run the iron over the original film to get rid of the air bubbles, aerodynamically every bit helps,,,
Paul De Tourtoulon
The vibrations of the engine continue !!! The wing centring dowel and the wooden block with the threaded plastic nut both broke away from the Starboard wing, with the two flap sevros' gone' it now loops, but I have had enough of this rubbish motor, it is going to be binned and the 20cc one is going in and the rockets back onto the wing. unless I can find a cheap alternative,, ( no asp ) Edited August 30, 2021 by Paul De Tourtoulon e
Paul De Tourtoulon
I may have been a bit hasty condemning the Skyraider with a 15cc petrol, I checked the rpm on it's first take off with a master 14 x 8 at 7.200 rpm, then this morning I dug out what it gave me on my Yuki Model 'Zero', 8.600 rpm, from 1.6hp down to 1hp so it should be ok with a 15cc petrol,,
Paul De Tourtoulon
I flew it this afternoon, it's fast and really noisy,so I think a good 15cc petrol is more than enough, the outlet on the silencer has an inside diameter of 19mm I was thinking of making a Db stopper as I can't seem to find anyone in France selling them, what are your thoughts and the hole diameters in one ?. thanks Paul
GrumpyGnome
I've had a real challenge making sure the prop does not slip on my RCGF15cc...... it's the old version though so maybe the prop driver on yours is better
Paul De Tourtoulon
you mean slipping on the crankshaft ?.

Paul De Tourtoulon
Doesn't it have a woodruff key?, i can't remember but it never happened to me,, I will strip it down and have a look before I bin it,, ps it isn't the beam mount one,,
GrumpyGnome
Sorry, I perhaps explained it badly. No problem between the crankshaft and prop driver (that I know of), rather the prop slips on the prop driver no matter how hard I try. First I used wooden props and thought the wood may be compressing and causing the slippage; then I tried composite - this seemed to slip so much that the washer between the prop and prop nut became embedded in the prop (possibly due to heat). Then I tried to grind some grooves into the prop driver - fail; I have now bonded some glass paper to the driver and prop to see if that helps (and tightened as much as I possibly can. If that fails, I'll buy a new prop driver...... Mine is the old, rear mounted type.
Paul De Tourtoulon
I Never had that problem but I did retard the ignition by around 2°/4° and the carb pop up pressure. so is mine
Paul De Tourtoulon
Ok not the cleanest of jobs, I am sorry to the real scale builders if these photos give you nightmares, it is not intentional and no planes other than my Skyraider were Hurt, Damaged, Tortured, or other,,,, I brought the engine forward 1 cm and in went the Pitts silencer, the gaping hole was from the old exhaust and yes it's going to stay that way, ? Paul De Tourtoulon
Well 3 flights and what's left of the Pitts silencer,,,,?
David Ovenden
Wow. That engine of yours really does have a "killer" vibration problem!
Paul De Tourtoulon
Yes even the balsa cockpit floor holding the Pilot has split down both sides and only held down at the front, so he is 'bobbing" about, ? with no access all glued down I ran some white glue down the inside of the fuselage,,,
Paul De Tourtoulon
Next problem with the engine vibration is the wing falling apart on the extrados,,? The crack is 14cm from the wing root 7cm long and the wing key is 21cm long so it isn't overstressed,,,
Paul De Tourtoulon
My Rcgf is still in 'destruct mode', a split behind the port wing on the fuselage,, I get 8.300 rpm at 110 Db, I have knocked up a 10 mm ( from 19mm) reducer after reinforcing the Fuselage I will see what the rpm and noise is like. GrumpyGnome
110! Good grief - that is ear defender territory.....

GrumpyGnome
A quick Google search showed that's the equivalent dB level to a jackhammer/pneumatic drill, and you should be wearing ear defenders .....
Paul De Tourtoulon
I measured it at 90cm behind the engine, The French federation measure it at 3 metres at 30cm from the ground, 92Db on grass and 94Db on a hard surface, I will see what the difference is this afternoon with my exhaust modification. Paul De Tourtoulon
The one with my piece of bronze reducing it to 10mm gave, at the tail 106Db at 3 metres 98Db and 8.000rpm and sounded nice in the air, but that 500 less rpm makes it 'lazy', the other one in the photo ( left ) Tail 110Db at 8.500 rpm, at 3metres 100DB
David Ovenden
You should have built a Douglas TBD Devastator or BTD Destroyer to put that engine in Paul - rather than a Skyraider!! That engine has frightening levels of vibration. Hope the plane survives. Edited September 21, 2021 by David Ovenden
Paul De Tourtoulon
No not my favourite plane David, but the Skyraider was my first control line plane, I am not shore but I think it had a Testors engine in it on 25 foot lines, I don't remember even doing 2 laps with it before it went into the bin,,? Brass chicane now drilled out to 12mm to see what that does,,,
David Ovenden
I was very unsuccessful with my control line models. Frog Gazelle with a DC Sabre. 2 Laps max and in the bin in pieces.
Paul De Tourtoulon
I built and crashed loads of them, I have a working Paw 1.49 diesel one in my garage last flown around 5 years ago,,
