Simon Chaddock
Not being a member of a club, although a country member of the BMFA, I have just renewed my Operators licence through the CAA's web site for £10.33. There are a number of questions to answer confirming your details but included is one asking for your insurer and the policy number. No mention that such insurance is not mandatory. You can proceed to renew if you leave these fields blank but it does not take much insight to see where this is leading. 😉
Bob Burton
Whether you need insurance to operate a UAV depends on what you use it for and what class it is in. For recreational use no insurance is required
Geoff S
Aren't you covered by the usual BMFA insurance as a country member? I assume by UAV you mean (mostly) fixed wing rather than multiprop quad/hexcopter.

Bob Burton
That is almost certainly the case from his contributions here, but an Operators ID is required for commercial operations, as is insurance, so I think it quite reasonable to ask for details if they are required

Or have I got that wrong?
