Storm Petrel 150%

Recommended Posts

Not sure if anyone remembers this model, Storm Petrel designed by Tad Davison, I'm sure it appeared in RCM&E in June 1991 if I'm correct. I have built 2 of these models some time ago, one with a .20 size engine and the other an electric version, and had great fun flying both of them. The original model had a wingspan of 54 inches and weighed about 3 - 4 pounds.

After some thought, I have decided to build another one at 150%. I did have an idea of creating one at 200%, but thought I would build one at 150% to start with.

This was on my build list as a school boy. If I hadn't already just built the 'Solo' (out of corrugated cardboard), I certainly would have done.

Looks great so far!

Thank you, would you build another model?

In this photo, you can see formers F1, F2, F3, F4, but when these were cut, there is a slight difference from the top to bottom in width, the difference is between 1.0mm and 1.5mm, which is not a great deal, and should be easy to correct with a little light sanding.

Making sure that all formers F2, F3, and servo and battery trays are all the same width, then will be able to start more work on building the fuselage.

Plan at the moment to go electric, but not sure of what size, as the build process progresses, I will be monitoring the weight, and weighing various parts.

This is what I have done over the last couple of days.

F2 on the left and F3 on the right, only 2 servos are needed, elevator and rudder, depending on what electric motor I select, will also depend on what LiPo battery is selected, but more than enough room and to move in such a position that the CG is spot on.
