Stephen Grigg
Another trip to the field and after clearing all the excuses why not to have a go my instructor took off handed to me and I had a good flight.I was all the wrong way round to start with but my instructor soon had me back in the right direction and I had a great time.I think I need to increase the battery size Im barely getting 10 minutes on a 3s 3200, but I had a great time
Stephen Grigg
Interesting day at the field today,1 instructor arrived and 3 of us novices.Flew the Boomerang twice, both went well, then flew the Mentor.I found the Mentor a lot easier to fly and was much more relaxed with it,even through in a couple of loops, very enjoyable day

Fog Dart
sounds like your making good progress, reading this has inspired me to take my Mentor out today as it is feeling left out!
Stephen Grigg
Ineed to revise the battery size only getting about 9 minutes,Im using 3200 3s
Fog Dart
How much throttle are you using? Mine will potter about with minimal effort. I use a 3s 4900 and i can fly for a long time with that!
Stephen Grigg
About half throttle although to be honest I didnt touch it once the instructor handed over, but thr 3s 4900 is what ill go for.Do you put the battery in the usual place and is the c of g ok.Do you know the weight of your battery?
Fog Dart
The 4900 goes right into the back of the fuselage then forward about an inch if that makes any sense. I am unsure of the weight of the battery but it weighs a fair bit

Stephen Grigg
3 really good flights today, and although a little windy I began to feel I was flying the model instead of trying to keep up with it.The only drama was I forgot the Branston pickle on the salad

Stephen Grigg
Yes David and although windy I wanted to fly instead of getting there ,watching and giving myself excuses not to fly, very encouraging and the club instructors give me lots of time and praise which I appreciate immensely and im loving the Mentor
Stephen Grigg
Hi fog dart even though the 5000 battery is 60 grams hevier it did not alter the C of G ,because of the battery position I presume so I flew with 3S 5000,3S4600 and 3S3200 with no difference in the handling, thankyou

Stephen Grigg
The Mentor has grown and grown on me With 4 batteries and 20+ minute flights im getting a good amount of stick time each visit. As the experts in the club say for an electric Fomie it flies beautifully
Stephen Grigg
Upto 30 minute flight times yesterday with glidiing and finding a couple of thermals,so 3 good flights and batteries to spare.A club member who is building 1 to use as a Tug flew mine with a3s 2500 ,checked th thrust first which measured 2.9kg,then carried out 5 20 second take offs followed by steady gliding down and this lasted for 20 minutes with still something in the battery. Stephen Grigg
The multiplex Mentor is a very forgiving model, only a complte idiot could get into difficulties with this model,May I introduce you to me the idiotI think you can gather I love this model. At the field today only another beginner ,myself and thchairman mowing the strip in between our flights.I was practising keeping straight on take off.The steerable tailwheel is to responsive for me and I thought Id see if I could reduce its movement when at home so I perseveered.First take off fine,a bit steep but the Mentor took care of things and gave me plenty of time to keep up followed by a good landing.2nd take off fine ,but as you know when it happens your lagging behind .No panic but to steep again.,it loops over and on its way back up stalls and is in the ground with the fuselage in 2 pieces before Ive reacted.I think it was so forgiving the first time I let it catch me out on the second. The club chairman offered to repair it for me very kindly and I didnt refuse feeling his expertise would restore it to its former glory better than me,So,its out with the Boomerang
Stephen Grigg
Interestingly having had the opportunity to think things through my previous crash with my now rebuilt Pioneer was identical so its obviously me doing something wrong.I dont do it when someone is with me so dont fully appreciate where im going wrong,
Stephen Grigg
When I take off I tend to oversteer with the tailwheel and rudder, and im considering fixing the tail wheel.Id like your opinions on this please
David Ashby - Moderator
Stephen, you said the model 'loops over' - can you be a bit more specific as to what happened? Taking off with the Mentor shouldn't be difficult and the thing to do is to keeps things smooth. I find the model is off the deck so soon as to need virtually no rudder during take off and once she's up, the ailerons take over.
